📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qasas – Verse 40

So We seized him and his army and threw them into the sea. [110] See then how was the end of the wrongdoers. [111]

✅ [110] The Destruction of Pharaoh and His Army

This means the people of Pharaoh were like concrete and stones in front of Allah, and Allah Almighty drowned them in the Red Sea in total contempt. This tells us that if man does not possess faith, he is completely worthless.

✅ [111] Reflecting on the Fate of the Wrongdoers

This means, "Oh reciter of the Holy Qur’ān! ponder over the horrible fate of these faithless people!" Thus, by sight it means to ponder, to reflect, i.e., the sight of the inner intelligence. From this we learn that to reflect on the infidelity of the infidels is a Divine Command and an act of worship.

Or it could mean, "Oh My Beloved, see how horrible has been the end of these wretched infidels." This also implies that the sight of the Holy Prophet ﷺ is on everything past, future, present, and things which still are not in existence.

On the night of Mi‘raj, the Holy Prophet ﷺ had seen those people being punished in Hell who were to be born many centuries after him and would be punished only after the Day of Judgement. Hazrat Jibraeel (On whom be peace) said, “These are the devourers of usury from your Ummah, these are the Ulama who did not practise what they preached,” etc.

The tafsir of Surah Qasas verse 40 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Qasas ayat 38 which provides the complete commentary from verse 38 through 42.

(28:40) Eventually We seized him and his hosts and We flung them into the sea.[56] So do see the end of the wrong-doers!

Ala-Maududi

(28:40) Eventually We seized him and his hosts and We flung them into the sea.[56] So do see the end of the wrong-doers!

56. Allah in these words has depicted their worthlessness and insignificance as against their false pride. They thought they were big people, but when the respite, Allah had granted them to reform, came to an end, they were thrown into the sea like rubbish.

(40) So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea.[1104] So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.

[1104]- Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) caused them to leave all their worldly wealth behind and enter the sea in pursuit of the Children of Israel. See 26:52-66.
