📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qasas – Verse 66

"They will not be able to think any reply [166], nor will they be able to ask each other. [167]"

✅ [166] Loss of Memory and Helpless Silence

On the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers will stand speechless, unable to recall what the Prophets had conveyed to them or what their own responses were.

This refers to a particular stage of the Day of Judgment where confusion and horror will dominate them so completely that they will forget everything, including the arguments they used in the world.

At other times in the Hereafter, their condition may change—as mentioned in other verses—so there is no contradiction between this verse and those where they are seen speaking or arguing.

✅ [167] Complete Loss of Religious Awareness

This also indicates that disbelievers will forget their religion even in the grave, just as they will on the Day of Resurrection. That is why, in response to the angels' questioning in the grave, they will only say: “I do not know.”

In contrast, the believer will retain complete awareness of his faith—not only in the grave, but also on the Day of Judgment. He will recognize:

  • His Lord

  • His Prophet

  • His religious teachers and guides

This verse highlights how true faith leaves an everlasting imprint, while disbelief leaves no firm foundation to hold onto in the Hereafter.
