Transliteration:( Fa il lam yastajeeboo laka fa'lam annamaa yattabi'oona ahwaaa'ahum; wa man adallu mimmanit taba'a hawaahu bighari hudam minal laah; innal laaha laa yahdil qawmaz zaalimeen (section 5) )
"Then if they do not respond to you, know that they only follow their own desires [133]. And who is more astray than one who follows his own desires without guidance from Allah? [134] Indeed, Allah does not guide the people who are unjust."
The command to “know” here is not directed at Allah—Who already knows all—nor at the Holy Prophet ﷺ, who also knew the reality of these people. Rather, it is meant for the common people, to understand that the deniers are following nothing but their base desires.
It’s also worth noting that while the text of the Torah was not a miracle, its guidance was. In contrast, both the text and guidance of the Holy Qur’an are miraculous.
Allah says: “Then bring one chapter like it” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:23).
From this, we learn that desire (nafs) can be of two kinds: one that aligns with truth, and one that opposes it.
Acting on the second type—which is against divine guidance—can be sinful or even disbelief, while acting on the first type, when it aligns with revelation, is reward-worthy.
Some pious servants have desires entirely in line with truth. For example, several verses of the Qur’an were revealed in agreement with the opinion of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Even before Prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ's inner desire inclined toward truth, worship, and remembrance of Allah.
In essence, desires vary, and so do the rulings concerning them—depending on whether they are aligned with or opposed to divine guidance.
