📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zumar – Verse 10

"Please declare: 'O My devotees who believe, fear [35] your Lord. There is good for those who do good in this world [36]. And Allah’s earth is spacious [37]. Most certainly, the steadfast shall be fully rewarded without [38] measure.'"

✅ [35] Faith First, Then Fear

This verse shows that piety and righteous actions come only after faith. Without faith, good deeds are fruitless, much like watering branches cut off from the root—no life or growth can result.

There are four levels of fear, and this fear applies to four types of people. The piety of the elite (khawās) is different from that of the common believers (‘ām), and the piety of the very elite (akhaṣṣ al-khawās) is higher still. Each group has its own depth of taqwa (God-consciousness).

✅ [36] Worldly and Eternal Good

The phrase “there is good for those who do good in this world” means that the pious receive both worldly and spiritual blessings. These may include health, lawful sustenance, protection from harm, and in the Hereafter, reward and salvation.

Allah promises in Surah At-Talaq (65:2–3):
“And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
Thus, the benefits of piety span both worlds, and are deeply impactful.

✅ [37] The Earth Is Spacious—Permission to Migrate

This segment encourages migration for the sake of religious freedom. If worship becomes restricted in one place, the believer is encouraged to move to a place where he can practice freely.
This does not mean abandoning worship, but rather seeking environments that allow its full expression.

Hence, this verse offers divine approval for migration, as a means to preserve faith and maintain devotion to Allah.

✅ [38] Unlimited Reward for the Steadfast

Reason for Revelation:
This verse was revealed regarding the Muslim emigrants to Abyssinia, who had migrated before the Holy Prophet ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah. Among them was Hazrat Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with him). Allah promises them a reward so vast that it cannot be measured or calculated—neither now nor later.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stated:
Every good deed will be rewarded by weight, except for patience, which will be rewarded without measure.
There will be no scale for the reward of the patient, as their sabr (steadfastness) carries a weightless, limitless reward in the sight of Allah.

Ibn-Kathir

10. Say: “O My servants who believe, have Taqwa of your Lord. Good is for those who do good in this world, and Allah’s earth is spacious! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.” 11. Say: “Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah, making religion sincerely for Him.” 12. “And I am commanded (this) in order that I may be the first of the Muslims

The Command for Taqwa, Emigration and to worship Him alone with all Sincerity

Allah commands His believing servants to remain steadfast in their obedience and have Taqwa of Him.

(Say: “O My servants who believe, have Taqwa of your Lord. Good is for those who do good in this world…”) means, the one who does good deeds in this world, will have a good (reward) in this world and in the Hereafter.

(and Allah’s earth is spacious!) Mujahid said, “So emigrate through it and strive hard and keep away from idols.”

(Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.) Al-`Awza`i said, “Their reward will not be weighed or measured; they will be given an immense reward.” As-Suddi said:

(Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.) means, “In Paradise.”

(Say: “Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah, making religion sincerely for Him…”) means, `I am commanded to worship Allah alone in all sincerity, with no partner or associate.’

(And I am commanded (this) in order that I may be the first of the Muslims.)

(39:10) Tell them (O Prophet): “O you servants of Mine who believe, have fear of your Lord.[29] A good end awaits those who did good in this world.[30] Allah’s earth is spacious.[31] Verily those who persevere shall be granted their reward beyond all reckoning.”[32]

Ala-Maududi

(39:10) Tell them (O Prophet): “O you servants of Mine who believe, have fear of your Lord.[29] A good end awaits those who did good in this world.[30] Allah’s earth is spacious.[31] Verily those who persevere shall be granted their reward beyond all reckoning.”[32]

29. That is, do not rest content with belief but follow it up with piety and fear of God. Act according to what Allah has enjoined and avoid what He has forbidden and live in the world fearing His accountability.

30. Good and well-being both of this world and of the Hereafter.

31. That is, if one city, territory or land has become difficult for the worshipers of Allah, they may emigrate to another place where they may not have to face any such hardship.

32. Those who brave all kinds of hardships and persecutions in following the way of God-worship and piety but do not abandon the way of the truth. This also includes those people who emigrate to other countries and experience hardships in the foreign land for the sake of religion and faith, and those also who continue to face every kind of temptation and calamity firmly and patiently in the land where they are being persecuted.

(10) Say,[1345] "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allāh is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]."

[1345]- The Prophet (ﷺ) is instructed to say on behalf of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to His believing servants.
