📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zumar – Verse 74

"And they will say: 'All praise be to Allah Who has made good His promise to us, and made us inherit [186] the land so that we may dwell in Paradise, wherever we please [187]. Excellent is the reward of the activities (in piety).'"

✅ [186] Fulfillment of Allah’s Promise and Inheritance of Paradise

The people of Paradise will praise Allah for fulfilling His promise — whether it was conveyed through prophets, scriptures, or divine inspiration. The word "inherit" signifies that they now occupy the place once destined for them in Paradise, including the spots that would have belonged to the disbelievers had they believed. This echoes the verse: "My righteous servants shall inherit the earth" (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:105), where "earth" refers to the land of Paradise.

✅ [187] Freedom and Vastness in Paradise

In Paradise, the believers will reside wherever they please, enjoying unrestricted movement, ownership, and authority over their dwellings and lands. Even a common believer’s share in Paradise will be ten times the size of this entire world. As for the elite among them, their reward and status will be beyond imagination.

This verse highlights the ultimate success of the righteous, the faithfulness of Allah’s promise, and the immeasurable reward for those who lived with taqwa (piety).

The tafsir of Surah Az-Zumar verse 74 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zumar ayat 73 which provides the complete commentary from verse 73 through 74.

(39:74) They will say: “All thanks and praise be to Allah Who has made His promise to us come true, and Who gave us the earth to inherit.[82] We may now dwell in Paradise wherever we please.”[83] How excellent is the reward of those who laboured![84]

Ala-Maududi

(39:74) They will say: “All thanks and praise be to Allah Who has made His promise to us come true, and Who gave us the earth to inherit.[82] We may now dwell in Paradise wherever we please.”[83] How excellent is the reward of those who laboured![84]

82. For explanation, see (Surah TaHa, Ayat 106-107, 124); (Surah Al-Anbiya, Ayat 106-107) and the E.Ns thereof.

83. That is, the Paradise which has been granted to each of us, is now our property and we possess full rights over it.

84. Maybe this is said by the dwellers of Paradise, or maybe this sentence is added by Allah to what the dwellers of Paradise will say.

(74) And they will say, "Praise to Allāh, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in Paradise wherever we will. And excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers."
