📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zumar – Verse 50

"Those before them said [126] so, but all that they had earned did not benefit [127] anything them."

✅ [126] Same Arrogant Claims Were Made by the Past Nations

This same arrogant statement—attributing success to personal ability—was uttered by many nations of the past, and it is recorded in the Holy Qur'an.

Among them were Pharaoh, Shaddad, and others who lived under this delusion of self-sufficiency and false pride in worldly accomplishments.

✅ [127] Wealth Became a Burden, Not a Benefit

Their wealth ultimately became a burden, not a blessing. Anything that diverts a person from Allah is a burden, no matter how glittering it may appear.

May Allah bless us with wealth like that of Hazrat Uthman-e-Ghani, which was used in the path of Allah, and not like the wealth of Qarun, which led to arrogance and destruction.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Az-Zumar verse 50 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zumar ayat 49 which provides the complete commentary from verse 49 through 52.

(39:50) Their predecessors also said the same, but their earnings proved of no avail to them,[68]

Ala-Maududi

(39:50) Their predecessors also said the same, but their earnings proved of no avail to them,[68]

68. That is, when they were seized for evil-doing, the ability of which they were so proud, did not avail them anything, and this also became known that they were not Allah’s favorites. Evidently, if their earning had been due to their capability and their being favorites with Allah, they would not have been seized for evil-doing at all.

(50) Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
