📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zumar – Verse 35

"Allah will remove [86] from them the worst that they did [87] and confer on them their reward for (88) the best of their deeds."

✅ [86] Relief from Past Wrongs

This verse brings glad tidings to the righteous, indicating that Allah will erase their past misdeeds — whether they occurred before accepting Islam or out of human weakness after faith. This divine mercy is reserved for those whose intention behind good deeds is pure, solely for seeking forgiveness and the pleasure of Allah, not for public display or praise.

✅ [87] Forgiveness Even for Early Errors

Some scholars mention that this even includes the deeds committed before embracing Islam, such as in the case of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), although it is well-established that he had no known acts of disobedience even during that time. This shows Allah’s mercy is so vast that even possible shortcomings are completely pardoned.

✅ [88] Reward for the Best of Deeds

Allah not only forgives the sins but goes beyond — He grants reward based on the best of their actions. Even minor good deeds of such sincere believers are amplified in value in the sight of Allah. For individuals like Hazrat Abu Bakr, whose sincerity and steadfastness were unmatched, every action is exalted, and every reward is multiplied, showing his unique status in the Divine Court.

Please refer to Surah Zumar ayat 32 which provides the complete commentary from verse 32 through 35.

(39:35) so that Allah may remit their worst deeds and reward them according to the best of their deeds.[54]

Ala-Maududi

(39:35) so that Allah may remit their worst deeds and reward them according to the best of their deeds.[54]

54. The people who believed in the Prophet (peace be upon him) had happened to commit most heinous sins, both ideological and moral, in the days of ignorance, and after affirmation of the faith the good that they did was not only that they gave up the falsehood they had been professing and accepted the truth that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had presented, but in addition, they had performed the best righteous acts in morality, devotion and in their dealings with others. Allah says: The worst deeds that they had committed in the days of ignorance will be wiped off from their account, and they will be rewarded for the best of their deeds found in their conduct book.

(35) That Allāh may remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them their due for the best of what they used to do.
