Transliteration:( Wattabi'ooo ahsana maaa unzila ilaikum mir Rabbikum min qabli aiyaatiyakumal 'azaabu baghtatanw wa antum laa tash'uroon )
"And follow the best, which has been sent [140] to you from your Lord, before the punishment overtakes [141] you suddenly, while you perceive it not."
"The best which has been sent" refers to the Holy Qur'an, and here the genitive case is used for narration, not comparison—because the entire Qur'an is excellent and must be fully followed.
Every verse of the Qur'an is perfect in its guidance, and the instruction here is to adhere to it in the most committed and sincere way possible.
The punishment referred to may include:
Visible worldly punishments such as defeat in war, famine, or natural calamities.
Or it could indicate death, particularly for the disbeliever, whose death signifies the beginning of divine punishment.
This verse is a stern warning that such punishment may arrive suddenly, without any sign, so one must act promptly in obeying divine guidance.
The tafsir of Surah Az-Zumar verse 55 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zumar ayat 53 which provides the complete commentary from verse 53 through 59.
(39:55) Follow the best[72] of what has been revealed to you from your Lord before the chastisement suddenly comes upon you without you even being aware of it.”
72. “To follow the best aspect of the Book of Allah” means that one should carry out the commands Allah has given and refrain from what He has forbidden, and learn lessons from what He has brought out in the parables and narratives. As against this, the one who turns away from Allah’s commands, indulges in the forbidden things, and does not heed His admonitions, follows the worst aspect of the Book of Allah, i.e. that aspect which the divine Book has declared as the most evil.
