22. If there had been gods besides Allah in the heavens and earth, then necessarily, they would have gone ruined [32]. Therefore Glory is to Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from the utterances which they fabricate. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(22) Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allāh, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allāh, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Anbiya – Verse 22

"If there had been gods besides Allah in the heavens and earth, then necessarily, they would have gone ruined [32]. Therefore Glory is to Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from the utterances which they fabricate."

✅ [32] Oneness Ensures Divine Order

This verse presents a logical and powerful argument for Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah).
If there were multiple gods, as the polytheists claim, the order of the universe would collapse—just like a kingdom ruins under the rule of negligent or conflicting kings.

If multiple deities existed and all had true power and knowledge, yet functioned in perfect harmony, then two independent wills would be required for a single system—which is impossible in divine governance.
And if they disagreed, it would demand opposing authorities to coexist, which is also logically and theologically impossible.

Hence, the perfect balance in creation proves the presence of One All-Powerful, All-Wise Lord.
The verse concludes by glorifying Allah, declaring Him free from all false claims and fabrications of associating partners with Him.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Anbiya verse 22 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anbiya ayat 21 which provides the complete commentary from verse 21 through 23.

(21:22) Had there been any gods in the heavens and the earth apart from Allah, the order of both the heavens and the earth would have gone to ruins.[22] Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Throne,[23] Who is far above their false descriptions of Him.

Ala-Maududi

(21:22) Had there been any gods in the heavens and the earth apart from Allah, the order of both the heavens and the earth would have gone to ruins.[22] Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Throne,[23] Who is far above their false descriptions of Him.

22. This concise sentence contains two arguments:

(1) The obviously simple argument is that no institution, no household, not to speak of the vast universe containing multitudes of countless distant stars, can function smoothly and properly, if it has two masters.

(2) The deeper argument is that the system of the whole universe, including that of the earth, is functioning according to a universal law. It could not work so even for a moment, if there had been no proper proportion, balance, harmony and coordination between the different powers and countless things. This is a clear proof that there is a universal and all powerful law and system which binds and forces these powers and things to cooperate and coordinate between themselves with a perfect proportion and harmony and this could not have happened if there had been different independent rulers. The existence of such a system is itself a clear proof that there must be One All Powerful Manager and Administrator governing and ruling the entire universe. For further details, please see (Surah Bani-Israil, ayat 42) note 47.

23. That is, The Sovereign of the whole universe.

(22) Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allāh, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allāh, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
