Transliteration:( Wa taqatta'ooo amrahum bainahum kullun ilainaaa raaji'oon (section 6) )
"And others split up their affairs among themselves. All are to return to Us [145]."
This verse refers to those who abandoned the unified Divine religion and created their own sects and beliefs, not based on revelation but according to personal whims and conjecture. As a result:
They became divided in both creed and practice.
Their self-created divisions led to conflicting religions and opposing deeds.
These divisions are not only a deviation from the truth, but also a cause for Divine punishment.
It is important to understand that the variation in the laws (Shari'ahs) of different Prophets was by Divine command, and these differences carried deep wisdom and benefit. Such differences are not punishable, because they were intended and revealed by Allah.
However, the divisions mentioned in this verse refer to man-made alterations, not sanctioned by Allah. These self-invented interpretations and fabricated sects are what made people deviate from the pure religion of Islam and thus made them deserving of accountability.
The verse concludes by reminding all that ultimately, everyone will return to Allah, where the truth will be revealed, and each will be judged according to the reality of their beliefs and actions.
The tafsir of Surah Anbiya verse 93 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anbiya ayat 92 which provides the complete commentary from verse 92 through 94.
(21:93) But they tore asunder their faith into many parts.[91] But to Us they are bound to return.
91. In this verse, the addressees are the entire mankind. It means: O mankind, in reality all of you belonged to one community and had one and the same religion and all the Prophets brought one and the same creed which was this: Allah alone is the Lord of all mankind, therefore they should worship Him alone. But afterwards the people corrupted this creed and invented and adopted the things they liked and mixed their own theories, whims and practices in it. This brought into being countless communities and religions. Thus it is absolutely wrong to say that a particular Prophet was the founder of a particular religion and another of another, and so on. The very fact that different religions came into being at different periods of time, does not prove that the Prophets created these differences. It is obvious that the Prophets of God could not found different religions nor could they teach their followers to worship any beings other than Allah.
