📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zukhruf – Verse 19

"And they describe the angels who are devotees of the Most Affectionate as females [29]. Were they present at the time of their creation [30]? Now, their evidence shall be recorded [31] and they shall be questioned."

✅ [29] Triple Blasphemy of the Disbelievers

The disbelievers committed three forms of disbelief in this statement:

  1. They falsely assigned children to Allah.

  2. They preferred sons for themselves, but ascribed daughters to Allah.

  3. They insulted angels by calling them female, which is against their pure and noble nature.
This shows that insulting angels is an act of disbelief, and also teaches that one’s own children cannot be treated as servants.

✅ [30] No Basis for Their Claim

Since no one witnessed the creation of angels, such a claim cannot come from personal knowledge. And as no Prophet ever stated that angels are female, their assertion is pure nonsense and baseless talk.

✅ [31] False Testimony Recorded

Their claim is labeled as “testimony”, since they insisted it was the truth passed down from their forefathers. But it is, in reality, a testimony of disbelief. Hence, it will be written as a sin, not a good deed, and they will be questioned for it in the Hereafter.

Please refer to Surah Zukhruf ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 20.

(43:19) They claim that angels, who are Allah’s chosen servants,[18] are females. Did they witness how their body is constituted?[19] Their testimony shall be written and they shall be called to account.

Ala-Maududi

(43:19) They claim that angels, who are Allah’s chosen servants,[18] are females. Did they witness how their body is constituted?[19] Their testimony shall be written and they shall be called to account.

18. That is, who are free from this that they should be males or females.

19. Another translation can be: Were they present at the time of their creation?

(19) And they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
