Transliteration:( Wa qaaloo law shaaa'ar Rahmaanu maa 'abadnaahum; maa lahum bizaalika min 'ilmin in hum illaa yakhrusoon )
"And they say: 'Had the Most Affectionate Allah so Willed, we should not have worshipped [32] them (idols).' They knew nothing about its reality, as they are only telling lies [33]."
The disbelievers confused Allah’s Will (irada) with His approval (rida). They argued: “If idol worship were wrong, Allah wouldn’t have allowed it.” This is flawed reasoning. For example, Allah commanded Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to sacrifice his son, yet actual sacrifice was neither approved nor intended. Similarly, Allah permits disbelief as a test, but never approves of it.
They based their beliefs on assumptions and hearsay, not on true knowledge. In matters of faith, opinions and conjectures hold no value. Their argument is a lie, lacking any valid evidence or divine sanction.
The tafsir of Surah Zukhruf verse 20 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zukhruf ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 20.
(43:20) They say: “Had the Merciful One so willed, we would never have worshipped these deities.”[20] But they have no knowledge of the matter and are simply conjecturing.
20. This was their reasoning from destiny to cover up their deviation and error, and this has been the argument of the wrongdoers in every age. They argued that their worshiping the angels became possible only because Allah allowed them to do so. Had He not willed so they could not have done it; and then it had been a practice with them for centuries and no torment from Allah had descended on them, which meant that Allah did not disapprove of their this practice.
