Transliteration:( Afa anta tusmi'us summa aw tahdil 'umya wa man kaana fee dalaalin mubeen )
"What! Can you make the deaf hear, and guide [69] the blinded on the way and those who are on the clear, wrong way? [70]"
The words “deaf” and “blind” here refer to those who are inwardly disconnected from the truth. Though they may see and hear physically, they are spiritually unresponsive—unable to recognize divine guidance or accept the truth of the Qur’an and the Prophet. This spiritual insensitivity renders them incapable of true understanding.
These people are not just misguided, but firmly and knowingly settled in their misguidance. It is not a mistake but a chosen path from which they refuse to turn back. Their situation is like that of a ship inside the sea, which may still return to shore. But if the sea itself becomes the ship, there’s no escape—it’s a complete engulfing. Such is the depth of their deviation.
The tafsir of Surah Zukhruf verse 40 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zukhruf ayat 36 which provides the complete commentary from verse 36 through 45.
(43:40) Can you, (O Prophet), then make the deaf hear, or direct to the Right Way the blind or one lost in manifest error?[36]
36. It means to say: Pay attention to those who are inclined to listen and have not closed their eyes to the realities, and do not consume yourself in showing the way to the blind and making the deaf to hear, nor consume yourself with the grief as to why your near and dear ones are not coming to the right path, and why they are making themselves worthy of Allah’s torment.
