"And ask [78] those of Our Messengers whom We sent [79] before: Did We appoint [80] some other Gods besides the Most Affectionate to be worshipped?"
This verse instructs the Prophet ﷺ—symbolically or spiritually—to ask the previous Messengers if any of them were commanded to preach polytheism. The answer is clear and implied: No Prophet ever called to the worship of anyone besides Allah. All divine messages, throughout history and across nations, have upheld Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) as their central teaching.
The verse asserts that the core of every Divine religion has always been the worship of One God. The idea of associating partners with Allah or worshipping multiple deities has no basis in any revelation. The Qur’an presents this truth rhetorically, allowing the logic to expose the falsehood of shirk (polytheism).
Thus, those who worship others besides Allah have no prophetic foundation to stand on. Their beliefs are built on desires and false traditions, not divine instruction.

Please refer to Surah Zukhruf ayat 36 which provides the complete commentary from verse 36 through 45.
(43:45) Ask all Our Messengers whom We sent before you whether We had appointed any deities beside the Merciful One to be worshipped.[40]
40. Ask the Messengers: Find out from the Books brought by them. Just as the meaning of: “If there arises any dispute among you about anything, refer it to Allah and His Prophet,” is not that the dispute should be taken before Allah and His Messenger, but that one should turn to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger for a decision, so “asking the Messengers” also does not mean that one should approach all the Messengers who have left the world and ask them, but the right meaning is: Discover what teachings the Messengers of Allah have left in the world as to which of them taught that another than Allah also is worthy of worship and service.
