📖 Commentary of Surah Ash-Shu'ara – Verse 14

"And they have [17] a charge against me, so I fear they may kill me [18]."

✅ [17] The Past Incident Recalled

Prophet Musa (عليه السلام) refers to an earlier event in Egypt where he had unintentionally killed a man. This act had led to a criminal charge against him, forcing him to flee the land. The "charge" mentioned here is that of manslaughter, which Pharaoh's people had not forgotten.

✅ [18] Fear of Retaliation

Musa (عليه السلام) expresses a genuine concern that upon his return to Egypt, the authorities might kill him in revenge or as punishment. This illustrates that while Prophets are divinely chosen, they are still aware of worldly risks and seek Allah’s protection when facing danger.

His fear also shows humility and realism, not weakness, as he fully entrusted the outcome to Allah’s will.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ash-Shura verse 14 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Shura ayat 10 which provides the complete commentary from verse 10 through 22.

(26:14) As for me, they hold the charge of a crime against me. I fear they will put me to death.”[11]

Ala-Maududi

(26:14) As for me, they hold the charge of a crime against me. I fear they will put me to death.”[11]

11. The allusion is to the incident of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) giving a blow to an Egyptian, who was fighting with an Israelite, and thus causing his death. Then as soon as Moses came to know that the report had reached Pharaoh and his people and they were planning to take revenge, he fled the country and took refuge in Midian. See (Surah Al-Qasas, Ayat 15-21). Now when after a period of almost ten years of hiding he was suddenly called upon and commanded to go before Pharaoh, who had already a charge of murder against him, with the message, Prophet Moses rightly felt apprehensive that he would immediately be involved in the murder case even before he was able to convey the message as commanded by Allah.

(14) And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."
