📖 Commentary of Surah Ash-Shu'ara – Verse 227

"But those who believed and did righteous deeds [223], and remembered Allah much, and took revenge after they were wronged [224], will soon know to which place they will return. [225]"

✅ [223–225] The Exception Among Poets and the Promise of Justice

This verse makes an honourable exception for those poets who are believers, who perform righteous deeds, who remember Allah abundantly, and who only respond after being wronged—not out of arrogance, but in just retaliation.

Unlike the misguided poets mentioned earlier, these individuals use their words in service of truth and justice. Their poetry supports faith, virtue, and the defense of Islam. The verse ends with a powerful warning—soon it will be known who returns to the better end, distinguishing the righteous from the wicked with ultimate clarity on the Day of Judgement.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ash-Shura verse 227 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Shura ayat 221 which provides the complete commentary from verse 222 through 227.

(26:227) except those who believed and acted righteously and remembered Allah much, and when they themselves were subjected to wrong, they exacted retribution no more than to the extent of the wrong?[145] Soon will the wrong-doers know the end that they shall reach.[146]

Ala-Maududi

(26:227) except those who believed and acted righteously and remembered Allah much, and when they themselves were subjected to wrong, they exacted retribution no more than to the extent of the wrong?[145] Soon will the wrong-doers know the end that they shall reach.[146]

145. “Those who do wrong”: The people who out of sheer obduracy calumniated the Prophet (peace be upon him) of being a sorcerer, poet and a mad and enchanted man, in order to defeat Islam, and to confuse the other people and distract them from his message and invitation.

(227) Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims][1069] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

[1069]- By replying through poetry to the attacks of hostile poets.
