📖 Commentary of Surah Ash-Shu'ara – Verse 28

"(Musa) said, 'The Lord of the east and the west and whatever is between them, if you understand' [37]."

✅ [37] A Rational Appeal to Recognize Allah’s Sovereignty

In calm and confident response to Pharaoh’s insult, Prophet Musa (عليه السلام) continues to proclaim the oneness and universality of Allah. By stating that Allah is the Lord of the east and the west and all in between, he affirms that divine control encompasses all directions, all regions, and all creation.

The phrase "if you understand" is a gentle yet powerful challenge to use reason and reflection. Musa appeals not to emotion but to intellect, urging Pharaoh and his people to recognize that no human can claim such universal dominion, and therefore only Allah is truly worthy of obedience and worship.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ash-Shura verse 28 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Shura ayat 23 which provides the complete commentary from verse 23 through 28.

(26:28) Moses continued: “(He is) the Lord of the east and the west, and all between them. If you only had any understanding!”[23]

Ala-Maududi

(26:28) Moses continued: “(He is) the Lord of the east and the west, and all between them. If you only had any understanding!”[23]

23. That is, You regard me as a mad person, but if you think you are wise people, you should yourself decide as to who is the real lord: this wretched Pharaoh who is ruling over a small piece of earth, or He Who is the Owner of the east and the west and of everything bounded by the east and the west including the land of Egypt. I believe in His sovereignty alone and have been sent to convey His message to a creature of His.

(28) [Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."
