📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 74

Then We made the upper side of that town lower [85] and rained upon them stones of baked clay [86].
(i.e., We turned the town upside down and pelted them with stones made of baked clay.)

✅ [85] The Town Was Inverted by Divine Command

Hazrat Jibraeel (peace be upon him) was commanded to raise the land of the people of Lut and elevate it to the skies. Then, by Divine will, he turned it upside down, casting it back to the earth in a reversed position.
From this we learn that the acts carried out by the close servants of Allah can be attributed to Allah Himself, as this deed was performed by Hazrat Jibraeel (peace be upon him), yet Allah says, “We made…”, indicating Divine authority through His angel.

✅ [86] The Punishment of Stones from the Sky

Following the inversion of the city, Allah rained down stones of baked clay upon them—each stone divinely marked for its recipient.
This verse hints at the severe punishment for grave sins such as adultery and sodomy. The stoning to death (Rajm) is highlighted here as an appropriate punishment in certain legal schools.
According to Hanafi jurisprudence, there is no fixed rule (hadd) for the punishment of sodomy; rather, the Qadi (judge) may decide based on the severity—be it stoning, hanging, or drowning.

This punishment signifies that sexual immorality, especially sodomy, is among the gravest of sins, warranting one of the most terrifying and complete destructions recorded in sacred history.

(15:74) and turned the land upside down, and rained down stones of baked clay.[41]

Ala-Maududi

(15:74) and turned the land upside down, and rained down stones of baked clay.[41]

41. These “stones of baked clay” might have been meteoric showers or volcanic eruptions that flew and rained upon them, or these might have been blown by a strong wind.

(74) And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
