    لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيۡنَيۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزۡوَٰجٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

    Transliteration:( Laa tamuddanna 'ainaika ilaa maa matta 'naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu 'mineen )

    88.Do not stretch your eyes toward what We have given some of them to enjoy [101], and do not grieve over them, but lower your wing of mercy for the believers [102]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

    (88) Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers. (Saheen International Translation)

    📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 88

    Do not stretch your eyes toward what We have given some of them to enjoy [101], and do not grieve over them, but lower your wing of mercy for the believers [102].

    ✅ [101] Detachment from Worldly Luxuries of the Disbelievers
    This verse advises the Prophet ﷺ—and by extension, all believers—not to be impressed or envious of the worldly wealth and luxury given to the disbelievers.

    Two key lessons emerge:

    1. A believer must not regard the possessions of an infidel with admiration, as their worldly gain holds no value in the sight of Allah if it lacks faith.

    2. Even if a believer is poor, he should be viewed with honor and dignity, for faith elevates status far above material wealth.

    This teaches us to value spiritual richness over material prosperity.

    ✅ [102] Mercy for the Believers
    The verse was revealed when seven caravans of wealthy Jews arrived in Makkah for trade. Some Muslims, being poor, wished that such wealth had been theirs.

    In response, this verse gently reminded the Prophet ﷺ—and through him, the believers—not to grieve over the worldly success of the disbelievers.

    Instead, he is commanded to lower his wing of mercy—a metaphor for gentleness, compassion, and care—towards the believers.

    The instruction underlines the importance of:

    • Showing kindness to fellow Muslims

    • Prioritizing brotherhood and compassion

    • Remaining emotionally detached from the temporary glitter of the dunya

    (15:88) Do not even cast your eyes towards the worldly goods We have granted to different kinds of people, nor grieve over the state they are in,[51] but turn your loving attention to the believers instead,

    (15:88) Do not even cast your eyes towards the worldly goods We have granted to different kinds of people, nor grieve over the state they are in,[51] but turn your loving attention to the believers instead,

    51. That is, do not grieve that they consider you as their enemy, though you are their sincere well wisher; that they regard their vices as their virtues; that they are not only themselves following but leading their followers on that way which inevitably leads to destruction. Nay, they are doing their best to oppose the reformative efforts of the one who is showing them the way of peace.
