📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 99

And worship your Lord until certainty comes to you [109].

[109] Lifelong Worship is Obligatory
The command in this verse is a powerful reminder that worship is a lifelong obligation, without exception.

  • The term "certainty" (yaqeen) is interpreted by the scholars as death, the one event that is absolutely inevitable.

  • Therefore, this verse means: continue worshipping Allah until the moment you die.

Even the Holy Prophet ﷺ, the most perfect of all creation, was ordered to continue worship until the very end of his life.
This implies that no one—no matter how spiritually elevated—is exempt from worship.

[110] Death Ends Duties, but Not Devotion
The verse also teaches that death marks the end of religious obligations such as prayer, fasting, and other forms of worship.

  • However, for the truly pious, even the grave becomes a place of remembrance.

  • Some of the noble companions were heard reciting Surah Al-Mulk from within their graves—evidence of their spiritual closeness and ongoing connection to Allah.

This final verse of Surah Al-Hijr closes with a deep and profound message: the journey of servitude ends only when life itself ends—but the spiritually awakened soul never ceases in glorifying its Creator.

(15:99) and worship your Lord until the last moment (of your life) that will most certainly come.[53]

Ala-Maududi

(15:99) and worship your Lord until the last moment (of your life) that will most certainly come.[53]

53. That is Salat and worship of your Lord are the only means which can generate in you that power of sustenance which is required to stand resolutely against the troubles and afflictions you will inevitably encounter in the propagation of the message of the truth and reform of humanity. This will comfort you, fill you with courage and enable you to perform that divine mission for which you have been sent in the face of abuse, derision and obstacles.

(99) And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
