📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 91

Those who divided the Quran into pieces [103].

[103] Misuse and Distortion by Previous Nations
The term “those who divided” refers primarily to the Jews and Christians who tampered with their scriptures. They accepted parts of the Taurat (Torah) and Injeel (Gospel) that suited them, while distorting, concealing, or rejecting the rest.

This indicates a selective and dishonest approach to Divine revelation, which is condemned in this verse.

Alternatively, this verse refers to those among the Quraysh and other disbelievers who mocked the Qur'an, dividing it in their descriptions:

  • Some called it poetry

  • Others, magic, fables, or tales of the ancients

This reflects their rejection of the Qur'an’s unity, truth, and divine origin, treating it as fragmented and inconsistent, when in fact it is a complete, harmonious revelation.

This verse warns against:

  • Altering or misrepresenting divine scripture

  • Picking and choosing parts of revelation to suit personal or political motives

  • And dishonoring sacred texts by reducing them to manmade categories

It also reaffirms that just as previous scriptures were revealed by Allah, so too was the Qur'an, with the same sanctity and authority.

(15:91) those who had split up their Qur’an into pieces.[52]

Ala-Maududi

(15:91) those who had split up their Qur’an into pieces.[52]

52. The schismatic were the Jews for they had split their religion into many parts and caused division in it. They believed in certain parts and rejected the other parts, and detracted some things from it and added others to it. Thus they had been divided into many sectarian groups, which were opposed to one another.

“They have made the Quran (Torah) into pieces” means that they believe in certain parts of it and reject other parts. The same thing has been stated in (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 85) like this: Do you then believe in one part of the Scriptures and disbelieve in the other parts.

This warning is like the warning We sent to the schismatic Jews. This is meant to warn the disbelievers that they should learn a lesson from the plight of the Jews who neglected the warning that was given to than by God, and persisted in their wrong ways, as if to say: You are beholding the degradation of the Jews. Do you like to meet with the same end by neglecting this warning?

(91) Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.[686]

[686]- Accepting part and rejecting part according to their own inclinations.
