📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 80

And indeed, the people of Hijr [the people of Prophet Salih] belied their messengers [91]

✅ [91] Rejection of One Messenger Equals Rejection of All

  • Hijr refers to a location between Madina Munawwarah and Syria, which was once the homeland of the people of Thamood.

  • They were sent Prophet Salih (عليه السلام), whose divine message they rejected.

  • Allah Almighty states they belied their messengers—even though they rejected only one Prophet—because:

    • Denying one Prophet is equal to denying all, since all Prophets brought the same essential truth: belief in the One God and obedience to divine commands.

    • This is an established Qur’anic principle: opposition to a single messenger equates to rebellion against the entire Prophetic tradition.

  • From this, scholars infer a broader principle:

    • Disrespecting even one noble Companion of the Holy Prophet ﷺ can be tantamount to rejecting all the Companions.

    • Similarly, this reflects poorly on one's attitude toward the noble Ahl al-Bayt (progeny of the Prophet).

  • Therefore, the modern-day insolent individuals who mock or reject righteous predecessors should take warning from the fate of the people of Hijr, whose destruction followed their denial of the truth.

(15:80) Surely the people of al-Hijr[45] also rejected the Messengers, calling them liars.

Ala-Maududi

(15:80) Surely the people of al-Hijr[45] also rejected the Messengers, calling them liars.

45. Al-Hijr was the capital city of the people of Thamud, and its ruins are found near the modern city of Al-Ula which is to the north west of Al-Madinah, and lies on the route from AI-Madinah to Tabuk. Though the caravans had to pass through the valley of Al-Hijr, the Prophet (peace be upon him) had forbidden the Muslims to stay in the valley on their journey.

When Ibn Batutah reached there in the eighth century of Hijrah on his way to Makkah, he wrote: I have seen the buildings of Thamud hewed into red mountains; the paintings look so bright as if they have been put on only recently, and rotten bones of human beings are found in them even today.” See (Surah Al-Aaraf, ayat 73) note 57.

(80) And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr[683] [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

[683]- The valley of stone.
