📖 Commentary of Surah Bani Isra’il – Verse 111

"And say, 'All praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a son [228], and has no partner [229] in His dominion, and has no supporter [230] due to any weakness. And proclaim His Greatness with glorification [231].'"

✅ [228] Refutation of Divine Offspring

This rejects the false beliefs held by various groups:

  • Polytheists of Arabia claimed that the angels were daughters of Allah.

  • Jews believed Hazrat Uzair (عليه السلام) to be the son of Allah.

  • Christians said Hazrat Isa (عليه السلام) is the son of Allah.

This verse firmly establishes that Allah has no offspring, and such attributions are complete falsehoods.

✅ [229] Denial of Any Partner in His Dominion

This is a rebuttal to:

  • The polytheists of Arabia and India, who believed in multiple deities.

  • The Zoroastrians, who claimed Yazdaan created good and Ahrimaan created evil.

  • The Mu’tazilites, who believed every individual is the creator of their own actions.

All these ideologies are forms of shirk (associating partners) in Allah’s sovereignty.

✅ [230] Rejection of the Notion That Allah Needs Help

Some misguided people believed that Allah enlists help due to weakness, as though He cannot manage the universe alone (Allah forbid!).
This verse refutes such beliefs. In Islam:

  • Allah bestows responsibilities (like managing aspects of creation) to angels and pious servants, not out of weakness, but as a mark of honour.

✅ [231] The Command to Glorify Allah

We are instructed to proclaim: “Allahu Akbar”“Allah is the Greatest”, both within and outside Salah.

According to Hadith Shareef, Allah loves these four phrases:

  1. لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُThere is no god but Allah

  2. اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُAllah is the Greatest

  3. سُبْحَانَ اللهِAllah is Pure

  4. الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِAll praise is due to Allah

Some Sheikhs of the Qadiri order practice reciting from “قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ” (S17:V111) until the end aloud after every Salah, along with loud Takbir.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Isra verse 111 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Isra ayat 110 which provides the complete commentary from verse 110 through 111.

(17:111) And say: “All praise be to Allah Who has neither taken to Himself a son, nor has He any partner in His kingdom, nor does He need anyone, out of weakness, to protect Him.”[125] So glorify Him in a manner worthy of His glory.

Ala-Maududi

(17:111) And say: “All praise be to Allah Who has neither taken to Himself a son, nor has He any partner in His kingdom, nor does He need anyone, out of weakness, to protect Him.”[125] So glorify Him in a manner worthy of His glory.

125. A subtle sarcasm is implied in the sentence. The mushriks believed that Allah had appointed assistants and deputies for the administration of His kingdom. Obviously this meant that Allah was helpless and powerless to carry out the administration of His kingdom. Therefore, He needed supporters to help Him in the work of His Godhead. This sentence negates their false creeds, saying: He does not stand in need of any gods and saints in order to delegate to them the different departments of His Godhead or make them governors in different parts of His kingdom.

(111) And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."
