Transliteration:( Wa mai yahdil laahu fahuwal muhtad; wa mai yudlil falan tajida lahum awliyaaa'a min doonih; wa nahshuruhum Yawmal Qiyaamati 'alaa wujoohihim umyanw wa bukmanw wa summaa; ma'waahum Jahannamu kullamaa khabat zidnaahum sa'eeraa )
"And whoever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided; and whoever He leads astray, you will find no allies for them besides Him [200]. And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, mute, and deaf [201]. Their abode is Hell. Whenever it cools down, We will increase for them the fierceness of the Fire [202]." [97]
From this, we learn that those whom Allah Almighty guides are truly on the path of righteousness.
As for those whom He allows to go astray, no one can help them, for they are devoid of divine support.
This implies that for the believers, Allah Almighty appoints helpers both in this world and in the Hereafter, while the absence of helpers is a punishment for the disbelievers.
Furthermore, only those who are destined for guidance benefit from the Holy Qur’an and Hadith.
These sacred sources are like merciful rain, but only fertile hearts will blossom through them.
On the Day of Resurrection, the inner conditions of the heart will be manifested on the external body.
Those who were blind-hearted in the world, will be resurrected blind.
Those who were deaf to truth, will be resurrected deaf.
Those who were mute in righteousness, will be resurrected mute.
However, this state is temporary, during the early stages of the Day of Judgement. Later, Allah will restore all senses:
"We have removed from you the covering, so today your sight is sharp." (Surah Qaf, 50:22)
So from the grave until accountability, they will be blind and deaf, and afterward, vision will be restored for reckoning. Thus, there is no contradiction in the different verses; they refer to different moments in the Hereafter.
This describes the utter despair of the disbelievers:
As soon as they feel relief from the fire, hoping it has cooled down,
The flames will reignite even more fiercely,
Shattering their hopes and increasing their torment.
This shows that Hell is not static, but rather a dynamic punishment, tailored to intensify hopelessness and agony for its inhabitants.
97. And he whom Allah guides, he is led aright; and whomever He leaves astray can never find helpers other than Him, and We shall gather them together on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, dumb and deaf; their abode will be Hell; whenever it abates, We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire.
Allah tells us how He deals with His creation and how His rulings are carried out. He tells us that there is none who can put back His judgement, for whomever He guides cannot be led astray,
(and whomever He leaves astray can never find helpers other than Him)to guide him. As Allah says:
(He whom Allah guides, he is the rightly-guided; but he whom He sends astray, for him you will find no Wali (guiding friend) to lead him) ﴿18:17﴾
(and We shall gather them together on the Day of Resurrection on their faces,) Imam Ahmad recorded from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how will the people be gathered on their faces” He said,
(The One Who made them walk on their feet is able to make them walk on their faces.) It was also reported (by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) in the Two Sahihs.
(blind) means, unable to see.
(dumb) means, unable to speak.
(deaf) means, unable to hear. They will be in this state as a punishment for the way they were in this world, blind, dumb and deaf to the truth. This will be their recompense when they are gathered on the Day of Resurrection, at the time when they need these faculties most of all.
(their abode) means, their destination.
(will be Hell; whenever it abates,) Ibn `Abbas said, “(This means) calms down,” Mujahid said, (It means) is extinguished,”
(We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire.) meaning, increasing its flames and heat and coals, as Allah says:
(So taste you (the results of your evil actions). No increase shall We give you, except in torment.) (78:30)
(17:97) Whomsoever Allah guides is rightly guided; and whomsoever Allah lets go astray, you shall find none – apart from Him[110] – who could protect him. We shall muster them all on the Day of Resurrection, on their faces – blind and dumb and deaf.[111] Hell shall be their refuge. Every time its Fire subsides, We will intensify for them its flame.
110. In this verse, the Quran has enunciated a divine principle. Allah guides to the right way only that person who intends to follow His guidance, and lets go astray that person who intends to go astray. Thereafter none is able to bring back to the right way the one against whom Allah has closed the door of guidance because of his own persistent deviation and obduracy. It is obvious that if a man turns his back against the truth and rests content with falsehoods, there is no power in the world to make him turn away from falsehood and come to the truth.
This is because after this depravity Allah provides for that wicked person such means as increase his aversion to truth and his love for falsehood.
111. On the Day of Resurrection, they will be raised up blind, dumb and deaf because they behaved like such people in this world and would not see the truth nor listen to the truth nor speak the truth.
