📖 Commentary of Surah Bani Isra’il – Verse 96

"Say, 'Sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you [198]. Indeed, He is All-Aware, All-Seer of His servants [199].'" [96]

✅ [198] Divine Testimony for the Prophet ﷺ

Among the miracles of the Holy Prophet ﷺ is that even inanimate objects recited the Kalima, and the sun and moon obeyed his commands. These are manifestations of Allah’s testimony affirming his truthfulness.

One of the greatest ongoing signs is that the pious servants of Allah—the Awliya and true believers—continue to exist until the Day of Judgement, all bearing witness to the truth of the Prophet ﷺ.

This unbroken chain of sincere followers is itself a living miracle and proof of Prophethood.

✅ [199] Allah Knows the True State of His Servants

The demands of the disbelievers, their arrogance, and their attitude are clear indicators of:

  • Who is rightly guided,

  • Who is astray, and

  • Who will meet a miserable end.

Allah is fully aware of every servant’s condition—both inward and outward—and His testimony alone is sufficient to confirm truth and falsehood.

Ibn-Kathir

96. Say: “Sufficient is Allah for a witness between me and you. Verily, He is Ever the All-Knower, the All-Seer of His servants.”) Allah tells His Prophet how to prove that what he has brought is true, saying to him to tell them: “He (Allah) is a witness over me and over you. He knows what I have brought to you. If I were lying to you, He would take revenge on me in the severest manner,” as Allah says:

﴿وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الاٌّقَاوِيلِ – لأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ – ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ ﴾

(And if he had forged a false saying concerning Us, We surely would have seized him by his right hand, And then We certainly would have cut off his life artery.) (69:44-46) Allah said;

﴿إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِ خَبِيرًا بَصِيرًا﴾

(Verily, He is Ever the All-Knower, the All-Seer of His servants.) meaning, He knows best who among them deserves blessings, good treatment and guidance, and who deserves to be doomed and led astray. He says:

(17:96) Tell them, (O Prophet): “Allah suffices as a witness between me and you. Allah is well aware and fully observes everything pertaining to His servants.”[109]

Ala-Maududi

(17:96) Tell them, (O Prophet): “Allah suffices as a witness between me and you. Allah is well aware and fully observes everything pertaining to His servants.”[109]

109. That is, Allah is fully aware of all my efforts which I am sending in order to reform you, and He is fully aware of the efforts you are making against my mission. His witness is sufficient because He will pass the final judgment.

(96) Say, "Sufficient is Allāh as Witness between me and you. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing."
