Transliteration:( Wa alqi 'asaak; falammmaa ra aahaa tahtazzu ka annahaa jaaannunw wallaa mudbiranw wa lam yu'aqqib; yaa Moosaa laa takhaf innee laa yakhaafu ladaiyal mursaloon )

10. And cast down your staff, then Musa saw it wriggling as it were a serpent (18), he set out turning (19) his back and didn't look behind. We said, 'O Musa fear not', undoubtedly, the Messengers have no fear in My presence (20).

Surah An-Naml Ayat 10 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

18. This means that snake in terms of physical appearance was a huge python, but in terms of movement, it was slithering like a lean serpent i. e. as if it is a lean serpent. This does not mean that the walking stick was not a serpent but it merely appeared as if it was a serpent.

19. This tells us that showing fear for the distress of an oppressor is not going against the status of prophethood. However, no fear comes into their hearts for any person's greatness The fear of affliction is an expression of hatred, while that of greatness is a means of obedience

20. Because Prophets are under My protection. Those who receive My protection have none to fear.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 10 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 7 which provides the complete commentary from verse 7 through 14.

(27:10) Now cast your rod!” But when he saw the rod writhing as though it were a serpent,[12] he turned his back in retreat and did not even look behind. “O Moses, have no fear. Messengers have no fear in My presence,[13]

12. In Surahs Al-Aaraf and Ash-Shuara, the snake has been called thuban (a large serpent) but here jaann, a small snake. The reason is that in physical size it was a serpent but in movement it was swift like a small snake. The same thing has been expressed by hayyatun tasaa (a running snake) in (Surah TaHa, Ayat 20).

13. That is, “In My presence there is no danger of any harm to the messenger. When I call someone into My presence to appoint him to the high office of prophethood, I Myself become responsible for his safety. Therefore, the messenger should remain fearless and confident in every kind of unusual situation: it will never harm or hurt him in any way.”
