Transliteration:( Wa saddahaa maa kaanat ta'budu min doonil laahi innahaa kaanat min qawmin kaafireen )
"And what she used to worship besides Allah had prevented her. Indeed, she was of a disbelieving people. [85]"
This verse highlights that prior to her submission, Queen Bilqis was held back by her former objects of worship, which prevented her from recognizing the truth sooner.
Her association with polytheistic beliefs was the reason for her initial disbelief and delay in embracing monotheism.
This shows:
The strong influence of ingrained beliefs in blocking guidance.
The challenge faced by many when moving away from long-held falsehoods.
The ultimate need to overcome such barriers to attain true faith and guidance.
The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 43 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 41 which provides the complete commentary from verse 42 through 44.
(27:43) What prevented her (from accepting the True Faith) was her worshipping deities other than Allah, for she belonged to an unbelieving people.[54]
54. This sentence has been added by Allah to clarity the queen’s position, saying that she was not obdurate and stubborn. She had been an unbeliever till then mainly because she came of an unbelieving people. As she had become accustomed to bowing down before a false deity since her childhood, it had become a hindrance for her to the right way. As soon as she came in contact with the Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him), she discerned the right way and the hindrance was removed forthwith.
