📖 Commentary of Surah An-Naml – Verse 72

"Say, it is near that some of the things you are hastening for, may have come close to you [138]."

✅ [138] Worldly Punishments Before the Final One

The word "some" indicates that certain punishments for the disbelievers would be sent immediately in this world, while others—such as the torments of the grave and the Hereafter—would follow later.
The first worldly punishment that befell these disbelievers came at the hands of the believers in the Battle of Badr, where they began to taste the consequences of their defiance.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 72 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 71 which provides the complete commentary from verse 71 through 75.

(27:72) Say: “The chastisement whose hastening you have been asking for, maybe a part of it has drawn quite near to you.”[89]

Ala-Maududi

(27:72) Say: “The chastisement whose hastening you have been asking for, maybe a part of it has drawn quite near to you.”[89]

89. This is a royal way of saying a thing. When words like “may be”, “perhaps”, “no wonder”, etc. occur in the Divine discourse, they do not contain any sense of doubt, but express Allah’s Independence and Self-Sufficiency. Allah’s power is so great that His willing a thing and its happening is one and the same thing. It is inconceivable that He should will a thing and it should not happen. Therefore, when He says, “No wonder it may well be so”, it means, “It will certainly be so if you do not mend your ways.”

(72) Say, "Perhaps it is close behind you [i.e., very near] - some of that for which you are impatient.
