📖 Commentary of Surah An-Naml – Verse 63

"Or He Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea [123] and He Who sends the winds bearing good tidings before His Mercy [124]? Is there any other god along with Allah? Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him."

✅ [123] Guidance in Darkness

From this, we learn that when Allah Almighty created the stars, etc. as guides for worldly journeys, then why should He not create guides for the Hereafter in the form of Prophets, Saints, and the Ulama?
In this verse, there is also a prophecy about future inventions—such as the mariner’s compass—which would assist travellers in finding direction during the darkness of night, just as we see today.

✅ [124] Winds Before Rain as Glad Tidings

Here the word mercy denotes rain, and the winds signify those that bring monsoon rains, through which people become hopeful of relief and blessings.
In the Holy Qur’an, the word “Riyāh” is used for winds of mercy, and “Reeh” for destructive wind, showing the contrast between winds that bring benefit and those that bring punishment.

Ibn-Kathir

63. Is not He Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy Is there any god with Allah Exalted be Allah above all that they associate as partners!) Allah says,

(Is not He Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea,) meaning, by means of what He has created of heavenly and earthly signposts. This is like the Ayah,

(And landmarks and by the stars, they guide themselves.) (16:16)

(It is He Who has set the stars for you, so that you may guide your course with their help through the darkness of the land and the sea…) (6:97)

(and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy) meaning, ahead of the clouds which bring rain, by means of which Allah shows His mercy to His servants who are suffering drought and despair.

(Is there any god with Allah Exalted be Allah above all that they associate as partners!)

(27:63) Who is it Who guides you through the darkness on land and sea?[78] And Who sends winds as heralds of good tidings ahead of His Mercy?[79] Is there any god associated with Allah (in this task)? Exalted be Allah above whatever they associate with Him in His Divinity!

Ala-Maududi

(27:63) Who is it Who guides you through the darkness on land and sea?[78] And Who sends winds as heralds of good tidings ahead of His Mercy?[79] Is there any god associated with Allah (in this task)? Exalted be Allah above whatever they associate with Him in His Divinity!

78. That is, “He has made such arrangements by means of the stars that you can find your way even in the darkness of the night.” This is also because of the wise planning of Allah that He has created such means by which man can determine his direction and the way to his destination in his journeys by sea and land. In the day time he is guided by different land-marks and the direction of sunrise and sunset, and in the dark nights by the stars. In Surah An-Nahl this has been counted among the bounties of Allah: “He has placed land-marks to direct people, and by the stars, too, they are guided aright.” (Surah An-Nahl, ayat 16).

79. “His mercy” the rain whose coming is promptly foretold by the winds.

(63) Is He [not best] who guides you through the darknesses of the land and sea and who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy? Is there a deity with Allāh? High is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.
