📖 Commentary of Surah An-Naml – Verse 5

"There are those for whom there is evil torment [8] and they are alone the greatest losers in the hereafter. [9]"

✅ [8] The Comprehensive Nature of Evil Torment

The phrase “evil torment” encompasses a wide range of punishments, beginning in this world and extending into the afterlife. These include: lack of guidance, defeat or capture at the hands of believers, spiritual unrest, and terrifying experiences at the time of death. Their graves will be constricted, filled with darkness and heat, followed by intense suffering on the Day of Judgement—including the severity of reckoning and various forms of punishment in Hell.

The wording “for them” implies exclusivity—such torment is specifically for disbelievers. If Allah wills, sinful believers will be spared from such extreme punishment.

✅ [9] True Loss Lies in Disbelief

Being the greatest losers in the Hereafter means that their good deeds will hold no value, and their sins will not be forgiven. This verse makes clear that such ultimate loss is not applicable to sinful believers, who may still receive Allah’s mercy.

The Qur’an confirms: “Undoubtedly, a man is in a state of loss, but those who believe...” (Surah Al-Asr 103:2–3). Thus, without faith, even a life filled with worldly accomplishments results in nothing but loss.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 5 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 6.

(27:5) It is they for whom a grievous chastisement lies in store;[6] it is they who shall be the greatest losers in the Hereafter.

Ala-Maududi

(27:5) It is they for whom a grievous chastisement lies in store;[6] it is they who shall be the greatest losers in the Hereafter.

6. Nothing definite has been said about the form, time and place of this “worst of punishment.” For it is imposed in this world also on different persons and groups and nations in countless different ways; a part of it is also experienced by the wicked when they are about to leave the world; man experiences it also in the intermediary state between death and resurrection; and then after resurrection it will become endless and everlasting.

(5) Those are the ones for whom there will be the worst of punishment, and in the Hereafter they are the greatest losers.
