📖 Commentary of Surah An-Naml – Verse 81

"And you cannot guide the blind from their error [147]. You can make only those to hear who believe in Our signs and they are Muslims [148]."

✅ [147] The Spiritually Blind Cannot Be Guided

This refers to those whose hearts are blind—they may see physically, but they are blind to truth and miracles. Their outward sight is of no benefit because they refuse to recognise divine signs.
However, this does not contradict the fact that the Holy Prophet ﷺ had brought many physically blind people to the light of faith—meaning, their spiritual sight was awakened through his guidance.

✅ [148] True Receptiveness Belongs to Believers

This means that only those predestined for faith, those whom Allah has blessed with divine knowledge, can truly hear and accept the message.
The verse also implies a distinction between Islam and Iman (faith), as the difference in structure before and after the word "Fa" (فهم مسلمون) suggests two levels of submission: one being outward (Islam), the other being rooted in true belief (Iman).

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 81 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 76 which provides the complete commentary from verse 76 through 81.

(27:81) nor can you direct the blind to the Right Way,[99] preventing them from falling into error. You can make only those who believe in Our verses to hear the call and then submit.

Ala-Maududi

(27:81) nor can you direct the blind to the Right Way,[99] preventing them from falling into error. You can make only those who believe in Our verses to hear the call and then submit.

99. That is, “It is none of your job to pull them forcibly to the right way and drag them along with you. You can only tell them by the word of mouth and by your example that this is the right way and the way they are following is the wrong way. But how can you guide the one who has closed his eyes and is not at all inclined to see anything?”

(81) And you cannot guide the blind away from their error. You will only make hear those who believe in Our verses so they are Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh].
