100. And the first and the foremost emigrants and helpers (276), and those who followed (277), them with good, Allah is pleased with them (278), and they are pleased with Allah. And for them Allah has prepared Gardens under which rivers flow. This is the greatest success (279).

Surah At-Tawbah Ayat 100 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

276. The Noble Companions are those first and foremost believers and those who had performed Salaah in the direction of both Qiblahs. Or it refers to the participants in the Battle of Badr, or those who took part on the Allegiance of Riedwaan.

The very first person to accept Islam was Bibi Khadija (May Allah be pleased with her). Among the men it was Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (May Allah be pleased with him), among the children it was Hazrat Alli (May Allah be pleased with him). From this we learn that being amongst early Muslim is indeed a praiseworthy quality, and to rally behind the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم in his time of need is worthy of great excellence.

277. By this is meant all those Muslims until the Day of Judgement who would be following in the footsteps of the Muhajareen and Ansaars or the rest of the other Companions, Allah Almighty is pleased with all of them. However, the former i.e. the noble Companions, are leaders and guides, the latter i.e. the general Muslims, are the followers.

278. From this emerge three issues:

1. Only those Muslims until the Day of Judgement are on the path of Truth whose lives are designed on the footsteps of the steps of the Ansaar, the Muhajereen and the rest of the noble Companions.

Thus the Rafzees and Khawarij are false.

2. One can say May Allah be pleased with him for every pious Sunni believer. These words are not restricted to the noble Companions only.

3. When Allah Almighty is pleased with the devotees of the Noble Companions, then imagine the extent of Almighty Allah's pleasure with the Noble Companions themsleves.

279. Through this certain issues come to light

1. Every noble Companion is upright and just, inmates of Paradise None of them was a sinner or transgressor.

2 No believer can ever reach the lofty status of a Companion because Allah Almighty has already declared them to be inmates of Paradise.

3. Any historical event or tradition which attempts to prove their transgression is bareles and contemptuous because it is in conflict of this verse. The Noble Companions number one hundred and twenty four thousand from whom special mention is made of the excellent qualities of some, though this verse serves to cover the excellence of all of them, as is the case with the Prophets of Allah Almighty.

Ibn-Kathir

100. And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhajirin and the Ansar and also those who followed them exactly (in faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.

Virtues of the Muhajirin, Ansar and Those Who followed Them in Faith

Allah mentions that He is pleased foremost with the Muhajirin, Ansar and those who followed them in faith, and that they are well-pleased with Him, for He has prepared for them the gardens of delight and eternal joy. Ash-Sha`bi said that,

﴿وَالسَّـبِقُونَ الاٌّوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَـجِرِينَ وَالأَنْصَـرِ﴾

(The foremost Muhajirin and Ansar) are those who conducted the pledge of Ar-Ridwan in the year of Hudaybiyyah. Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, Sa`id bin Al-Musayyib, Muhammad bin Sirin, Al-Hasan and Qatadah said that they are those who performed the prayer towards the two Qiblahs with the Messenger of Allah ﴿first toward Jerusalem and later toward the Ka`bah﴾. Allah, the Most Great, stated that He is pleased foremost with the Muhajirin, the Ansar and those who followed their lead with excellence. Therefore, woe to those who dislike or curse them, or dislike or curse any of them, especially their master after the Messenger, the best and most righteous among them, the Siddiq (the great truthful one) and the grand Khalifah, Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafah, may Allah be pleased with him. The failure group, the Rafidah (a sect of Shiites), are the enemies of the best Companions, they hate and curse them, we seek refuge with Allah from such evil. This indicates that the minds of these people are twisted and their hearts turned upside down, for where are they in relation to believing in the Qur’an They curse those whom Allah stated He is pleased with! As for the followers of the Sunnah, they are pleased with those whom Allah is pleased with, curse whomever Allah and His Messenger curse, and give their loyalty to Allah’s friends and show enmity to the enemies of Allah. They are followers not innovators, imitating ﴿the Sunnah﴾ they do not initiate it on their own. They are indeed the party of Allah, the successful, and Allah’s faithful servants.

(9:100) And of those who led the way – the first of the Emigrants (Muhajirun) and the Helpers (Ansar), and those who followed them in the best possible manner – Allah is well-pleased with them and they are well-pleased with Allah. He has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow; therein they will abide forever. That is the supreme triumph.
