Transliteration:( Am hasibtum an tutrakoo wa lammaa ya'lamil laahul lazeena jaahadoo minkum wa lam yattakhizoo min doonil laahi wa laa Rasoolihee wa lalmu'mineena waleejah; wallaahu khabeerum bimaa ta'maloon )
Do you think that you would be left alone? And Allah has not yet made known [34] those of you who will fight in His way and will not take anyone as a confidant except Allah and His Messenger and the believers. Allah is aware of what you do [35].
Allah Almighty be praised! What a refined translation! This verse conveys that true understanding of Allah's servants is a path to understanding Allah Himself. Through the struggles and trials of striving in His cause, Allah will distinguish the sincere believers from the hypocrites.
Without such testing, this distinction would remain hidden. The verse reminds us that believers are to rely only on Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and fellow believers, especially in times of hardship and warfare.
Allah Almighty is All-Knowing and Omniscient, and every effort made in His cause is recorded with precision.
This part of the verse addresses those who may desire to avoid obligations like jihad. It declares: "Do you so desire that Holy War should not be obligatory upon you?" Such desire contradicts the Divine plan of testing faith through sacrifice and loyalty.
Jihad becomes a scale:
The sincere believers stand firm and show willingness to sacrifice.
The hypocrites, on the other hand, expose themselves by avoiding commitment and often acting as informants for the enemies.
Thus, the verse defines jihad not just as a physical struggle, but as a spiritual criterion that separates truthful dedication from hidden betrayal.
16. Do you think that you shall be left alone while Allah has not yet tested those among you who have striven hard and fought, and have not taken Walijah besides Allah and His Messenger, and the believers. Allah is well-acquainted with what you do.
Allah said,
(Do you think), O believers that We will leave you untested with matters that make apparent those who have pure, good intent from those who have false intent This is why Allah said next,
(while Allah has not yet tested those among you who have striven hard and fought and have not taken Walijah besides Allah and His Messenger, and the believers…), meaning, supporters and confidants. Rather, they are sincere for Allah and His Messenger inwardly and outwardly. Allah also said;
(Alif-Lam-Mim. Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: “We believe,” and will not be tested. And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will certainly make known those who are true, and will certainly make known those who are liars…) ﴿29:1-3﴾,
(Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His cause) and (also) tests those who are patient)﴿3: 142﴾, and,
(Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which you are now, until He distinguishes the wicked from the good)﴿3:179﴾. In summary, since Allah legislated Jihad for His servants, He explained that the wisdom behind doing so includes testing His servants, distinguishing between those who obey Him and those who disobey Him. Allah, the Exalted, is the All-Knower of what occurred, what will occur, and the true essence of what might occur had He decided it. Therefore, Allah knows everything before it occurs and how it will occur, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, nor a Lord except Him. Truly, there is none who can avert Allah’s judgment and decision.
(9:16) Do you imagine that you will be spared without being subjected to any test? Know well that Allah has not yet determined who strove hard (in His cause), and has not taken any others instead of His Messenger and the believers as his trusted allies?[18] Allah is well aware of all that you do.
18. The addressees in Ayat 16 were those Muslims who had recently embraced Islam. It means to tell them plainly: “Now that you have embraced Islam, you shall have to give a genuine proof by a trial that you have accepted it because you believe in its truth and not because it has become supreme in the country by the exertions of the true believers. The trial is that you shall have to sacrifice your lives, wealth, and your near and dear ones for the sake of Allah and His Way. Then and only then, you will be regarded as true believers.
