Quran-9:69 Surah At-tawbah English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Kallazeena min qablikum kaanoo ashadda minkum quwwatanw wa aksara amwaalanw wa awlaadan fastamta'oo bikhalaaqihim fastamta'tum bikhalaaqikum kamas tamta'al lazeena min qablikum bikhalaa qihim wa khudtum kallazee khaadooo; ulaaa'ika habitat a'maaluhum fid dunyaa wal Aakhirati wa ulaaa'ika humul khaasiroon )

69. Even all those before you were mightier than you in strength and more abundant(189). in wealth and children. They enjoyed their share. So you enjoy your share just as those before you enjoyed theirs. And you indulged in absurdity just as they indulged. Their deeds are wasted (190), in the world and the Hereafter (191) And they are the losers.

Surah At-Tawbah Ayat 69 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

189. The example of this is the people of Aad and Thamood who were extremely powerful. Despite this strength when they opposed a Prophet of Allah Almighty they were destroyed. Likewise Oh hypocrites be mindful of your end. From this we learn that materialistic power is always defeated by spiritual power. Observe seventy thousand magicians were defeated single handedly by Hazrat Moosa (May Allah be pleased with him). The entire forces of the world will fail not only against a Prophet but against one saint.

190. From this we learn two issues:

1. Good deeds nullified through are opposition to Allah's Prophet's but remain unchanged. Infidelity is the cause of confiscation of good deeds

 2. Analogy is a truism, and Analogy in matters of Shariah is given credence in Islam. This is because Allah Almighty has explained His servants by means of an analogy that Oh you present day hypocrites and infidels because your evil beliefs and absurdities are like that of your predecessors in infidelity your end too will be like theirs i.c. destruction.

This is analogy indeed, that is to give a common order for a common cause. Say Allah Almighty:

"Therefore, take heed. O you with your eyes". S59 V2.

191. Good deeds benefit a person in this world, save him from calamities, increases his wealth and provides him with every honour. Says Allah Almighty: "And he who fears Allah. Allah will make a way for his deliverance. And will provide for him whence he expects no". (S65:V2-3) In the Hereafter too they will be his saviour through which he will receive the bounties of Allah Almighty. Good will neither benefit the infidel in this world or in the Hereafter From this we learn that prayers, incantations, talismans, etc of the infidels are not beneficial but rather wasteful.

Ibn-Kathir

69. Like those before you: they were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion (a while), so enjoy your portion (a while) as those before you enjoyed their portion (a while); and you indulged in play and pastime as they indulged in play and pastime. Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers.) Allah says, these people were touched by torment in this life and the Hereafter, just as those before them. Allah’s statement,

(their portion), means, ﴿they mocked﴾ their religion, according to Al-Hasan Al-Basri. Allah’s statement,

(and you indulged in play and pastime as they indulged in play and pastime), indulged in lies and falsehood,

(Such are they whose deeds are in vain), their deeds are annulled; they will not acquire any rewards for them because they are invalid,

(in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers.) because they will not acquire any rewards for their actions. Ibn `Abbas commented, “How similar is this night to the last night,

(Like those before you…) These are the Children of Israel, with whom we were compared. The Prophet said,

«وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتَتَّبِعُنَّهُمْ حَتَّى لَوْ دَخَلَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْهُمْ جُحْرَ ضَبَ لَدَخَلْتُمُوه»

(By He in Whose Hand is my life! You will imitate them, and even if a man of them entered the den of a lizard, you will enter it likewise!)” Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said,

(By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will follow the traditions of those who were before you a hand span for a hand-span and forearm’s length for forearm’s length, and an arm’s length for an arm’s length. And even if they enter the den of a lizard, you will also enter it.) They asked, “Who, O Allah’s Messenger, the People of the Book” He said, (Who else)” This Hadith is similar to another Hadith collected in the Sahih.

(9:69) Your ways are like the ways of those who have gone before you.[76] They were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in riches and children. They enjoyed their lot for a while as you have enjoyed your lot, and you also engaged in idle talk as they did. Their works have come to naught in this world, and in the Hereafter they are surely the losers.

76. In the preceding verse, they were being mentioned in the third person, but here they are being addressed directly in the second person.
