📖 Commentary of Surah At-Tawbah – Verse 96

“They swear before you so that you may be pleased [265] with them. But if you are pleased with them, then undoubtedly, Allah is not pleased with the disobedient people [266].”

✅ 265. The Hypocrite’s Deeds for People’s Approval

This verse teaches that the hypocrites perform good deeds not for the pleasure of Allah, but to please others and gain their approval. The believer, on the other hand, does everything solely for the pleasure of Allah Almighty. Riya (doing good deeds for show) is a sign of hypocrisy in action. The believer’s intention is pure, aiming to seek Allah's pleasure, not to seek praise or recognition from people.

✅ 266. The Futility of Pleasing the Hypocrites

This verse addresses the Muslims, reminding them that approving of the hypocrites based on their false oaths will not benefit them in any way. The approval of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is what truly matters. If Allah is pleased with someone, then the Messenger ﷺ would be pleased with them, and vice versa. Allah says, "Then follow me; Allah will love you" (S3:V31). This indicates that the true pleasure lies in pleasing Allah, and not in seeking approval from hypocrites.

This also teaches that if Muslims are deceived by the infidels or hypocrites, they are not to be considered sinful, as the verse does not censure them for being misled. However, they should be cautious not to seek approval from those whose actions are not sincere.
