Transliteration:( in tusibka hasanatun tasu'hum; wa in tusibka museebatuny yaqooloo qad akhaznaaa amranaa min qablu wa yatawallaw wa hum farihoon )
If good befalls you then it hurts [142] them, and if any misfortune [143] comes to you then they say: "We had already taken precautions to set our works before [144]." And they turn back rejoicing.
This verse hints that infidels rejoice at any difficulty faced by the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims.
Similarly, hypocrites express sadness or indifference at the Muslims’ success and happiness.
True Muslims share the joys and sorrows of their brethren: “At the illness of one limb, every limb becomes restless.”
Anyone unmoved by the community’s hardship is spiritually weak and disconnected.
“Misfortune” refers to death, injury, or defeat.
Though the verse addresses the Prophet ﷺ outwardly, its meaning extends to all Muslims.
The Prophet ﷺ himself never fled any battle; anyone claiming otherwise should be urged to repent.
The Prophet ﷺ is known as the bravest among all.
The phrase “We had already taken precautions” refers to hypocrites’ claim that they avoided battle as a form of self-preservation.
This highlights that not undergoing hardships in the path of Allah is a true loss, while enduring them is a gain.
Those who spend abundantly for Allah’s cause profit spiritually, whereas those who hold back suffer loss.
The affairs of Allah are often the opposite of worldly logic.
50. If good befalls you, it grieves them, but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: “We took our precaution beforehand,” and they turn away rejoicing. 51. Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Mawla (protector).” And in Allah let the believers put their trust.
If a blessing, such as victory and triumph over the enemies, is given to the Prophet , thus pleasing him and his Companions, it grieves the hypocrites,
(but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: “We took our precaution beforehand,”), they say, we took precautions when we did not join him,
(and they turn away rejoicing.) Allah directed His Prophet to reply to the perfect enmity they have towards him,
(Say), to them,
(Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us.) for we are under His control and decree,
(He is our Mawla.), Master and protector,
(And in Allah let the believers put their trust) ﴿9:51﴾, and we trust in Him. Verily, He is sufficient for us and what an excellent guardian.
(9:50) If good fortune befalls you, it vexes them; and if an affliction befalls you, they turn away in jubilation and say: “We have taken due care of our affairs in good time.”
