Transliteration:( Fa ir raja'akal laahu ilaa taaa'ifatim minhum fastaaa zanooka lilkhurooji faqul lan takhrujoo ma'iya abadanw wa lan tuqaatiloo ma'iya 'aduwwan innakum radeetum bilqu'oodi awwala marratin faq'udoo ma'al khaalifeen )

83. Then if Allah brings you back to a party of them, and they ask you [229] for permission to go forth, say: "Never will you go forth with me, nor will you ever fight [230] with any enemy. You have chosen to sit at home the first time, so sit with those who remain behind [231]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(83) If Allāh should return you to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind." (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah At-Tawbah – Verse 83

“Then if Allah brings you back to a party of them, and they ask you [229] for permission to go forth, say: "Never will you go forth with me, nor will you ever fight [230] with any enemy. You have chosen to sit at home the first time, so sit with those who remain behind [231].”

✅ 229. The Hypocrites Seeking Permission After the Battle

By this is meant that when the Prophet ﷺ returns to Madina Munawwarah from the Battle of Tabuk, these hypocrites would deceitfully ask, “Oh Prophet of Allah ﷺ, grant us permission to participate in future battles with you.” This verse contains a prophecy, expressing that they would say this, but with conditions, demonstrating their insincerity.

✅ 230. The Refusal of Future Participation

This information is used to express refusal. In the future, they will not be granted permission to participate in the Holy War because they chose to stay behind the first time. It highlights that their initial decision to remain behind, despite the call to fight for the sake of Allah, resulted in their exclusion from future opportunities to do so.

From this, a few issues arise:

  1. One should remain aloof from faithless people, even though they may try to call themselves Muslims. Not every person who recites the Kalima is a true believer. The hypocrites were reciters of the Kalima, but they were refused participation in the Holy Wars.

  2. Muslims can prevent the faithless from praying in their mosques, just as the hypocrites were prevented from participating in the Holy War, even though both Holy War and Salah are acts of worship.

  3. Laws meant for apparent infidels can be applied to hypocrites, such as stopping them from the mosques during the time of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and barring them from Holy War due to their hidden infidelity.

✅ 231. Consequence of Remaining Behind in the Battle

By this, it means that since the hypocrites preferred to stay away from the Battle of Tabuk, they will now remain excluded from future Holy Wars. They will not be given permission to participate in any future battles.

This teaches us that those who have turned away from the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed company will not benefit from it. A bat can never obtain the light of the sun.

However, those eager to receive blessings will continue to do so according to their capacity. The power of electricity is the same, but its light reflects differently according to the watts of the globes. Similarly, the blessed company of the Prophet ﷺ was the same for all, but the capacity to receive blessings varied — as seen in the cases of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique, Hazrat Umar Farouk, and others.

Ibn-Kathir

83. If Allah brings you back to a party of them (the hypocrites), and they ask your permission to go out (to fight), say: “Never shall you go out with me nor fight an enemy with me; you were pleased to sit (inactive) on the first occasion, then you sit (now) with those who lag behind.”

Hypocrites are barred from participating in Jihad

Allah commands His Messenger, peace be upon him,

(If Allah brings you back), from this battle,

(to a party of them) in reference to the twelve (hypocrite) men, according to Qatadah,

(and they ask your permission to go out), with you to another battle,

(say: “Never shall you go out with me nor fight an enemy with me…”) as an admonishment and punishment for them. Allah mentioned the reason for this decision,

(“You were pleased to sit (inactive) on the first occasion…”) Allah said in a similar Ayah,

(And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time. ) ﴿6:110﴾ The recompense of an evil deed includes being directed to follow it with another evil deed, while the reward of a good deed includes being directed to another good deed after it. For instance, Allah said concerning the `Umrah of Hudaybiyyah,

(Those who lagged behind will say, when you set forth to take the spoils.)﴿48:15﴾ Allah said next,

(“…then you sit (now) with those who lag behind.”) in reference to the men who lagged behind from ﴿Tabuk﴾ battle, according to Ibn `Abbas.

(9:83) Then if Allah brings you face to face with a party of them, and they ask your leave to go forth (to fight in the Way of Allah), tell them: “You shall not go forth with me, and shall never fight against any enemy along with me. You were well-pleased to remain at home the first time, so now continue to remain with those who have stayed behind.”
