Transliteration:( Alam ya'lamooo annahoo mai yuhaadidillaaha wa Rasoolahoo fa'anna lahoo Naara jahannama khaalidan feehaa; zaalikal khizyul 'Azeem )
"Are they not aware [176] that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger—for him is the fire of Hell, in which he will abide forever [177]? That is the great humiliation."
This refers specifically to those who oppose Allah and His Messenger ﷺ by outright rejection—by considering divine laws to be false or invalid. Such opposition is not mere disobedience or sin but rather a form of disbelief (kufr). Therefore, sinful Muslims who knowingly transgress divine commands while still believing in their truth are not included here. Their actions are sinful, but not outright rejection. This distinction between rejection and transgression is key: rejection is disbelief, while transgression is a major sin.
This verse clearly establishes that eternal punishment in Hell is reserved for disbelievers. Sinful believers may enter Hell temporarily for purification, similar to how impure gold is refined in fire. In contrast, the disbelievers are like coal that fuels the fire. The imagery highlights the difference in outcome based on belief. We also learn that even the slightest opposition to the Prophet ﷺ’s message constitutes disbelief. Thus, rejecting any word or religious action of the Prophet ﷺ is tantamount to rejecting Allah, reinforcing the inseparable link between obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
