📖 Commentary of Surah At-Tawbah – Verse 125

“And as for those in whose hearts there is a disease [357], it has increased [358] them in filth upon filthiness, and they die while they are infidels [359].”

✅ 357. The Disease in the Heart

This refers to hearts that are void of love for the Holy Prophet ﷺ, the Qur’an, and the Hadith. Such hearts are vulnerable to spiritual disease and ultimately lean towards disbelief. The Qur’an is like water—just as water gives life to the seed in the soil, it revives the pure heart but cannot purify what is inherently corrupt. Similarly, rain increases the stench of gutters; the Qur’an increases the impurity in hearts already diseased.

✅ 358. Increase in Filth

When new verses are revealed, those with corrupt hearts reject them just as they rejected previous verses. This cumulative rejection leads to an increase in filth upon filth. According to Tafseer Roohul Bayaan, “Rijs” (filth) refers to mental or spiritual impurity, while “Najas” refers to natural or physical impurity. Some matters may fall under both, while others may be one and not the other.

✅ 359. Dying as Disbelievers

The saints and scholars state that a heart filled with enmity for the Holy Prophet ﷺ rarely receives divine guidance or the opportunity to repent. Such a person often dies in disbelief. May Allah protect all hearts from such hatred and keep them steadfast upon the path of faith and love for the Prophet ﷺ.

Ala-Maududi

(9:125) But those whose hearts are affected with the disease (of hypocrisy), every new surah added a fresh abomination to their abomination.[124] They remained unbelievers till their death.

124. As regards the increase and decrease in faith, disbelief and hypocrisy, please refer to (Surah Al-Anfal, ayat 2) note 2.

(125) But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil.[508] And they will have died while they are disbelievers.
