Transliteration:( Wa ammal lazeena fee quloobihim maradun fazaadat hum rijsan ilaa rijsihim wa maatoo wa hum kaafiroon )
“And as for those in whose hearts there is a disease [357], it has increased [358] them in filth upon filthiness, and they die while they are infidels [359].”
This refers to hearts that are void of love for the Holy Prophet ﷺ, the Qur’an, and the Hadith. Such hearts are vulnerable to spiritual disease and ultimately lean towards disbelief. The Qur’an is like water—just as water gives life to the seed in the soil, it revives the pure heart but cannot purify what is inherently corrupt. Similarly, rain increases the stench of gutters; the Qur’an increases the impurity in hearts already diseased.
When new verses are revealed, those with corrupt hearts reject them just as they rejected previous verses. This cumulative rejection leads to an increase in filth upon filth. According to Tafseer Roohul Bayaan, “Rijs” (filth) refers to mental or spiritual impurity, while “Najas” refers to natural or physical impurity. Some matters may fall under both, while others may be one and not the other.
The saints and scholars state that a heart filled with enmity for the Holy Prophet ﷺ rarely receives divine guidance or the opportunity to repent. Such a person often dies in disbelief. May Allah protect all hearts from such hatred and keep them steadfast upon the path of faith and love for the Prophet ﷺ.
