📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Chapter – Surah At-Tawbah Verse 54

And what prevented their expenditures from being accepted was only that they denied [149] Allah and His Messenger. And they come to prayer lazily [150] and spend only unwillingly [151].

✅ 149. Denial of Allah and His Messenger

This verse teaches that the worship of one who denies Allah and His Messenger is unacceptable.
Like a branch cannot bear fruit unless connected to the root, good deeds must be rooted in sincere servitude to the Holy Prophet ﷺ for acceptance.

✅ 150. Laziness in Prayer

Performing prayer negligently is a characteristic of hypocrites.
From this we derive several legal and spiritual lessons:

  • Performing prayer at the last moment.

  • Habitually praying without congregation.

  • Praying bare-headed, with unbuttoned shirts, or folded sleeves.
These reflect negligence and are undesirable acts in Salah.

✅ 151. Spending Unwillingly

Hypocrites give charity unwillingly because they do not truly believe in its reward.
Their spending is to hide hypocrisy or seek worldly favors.
Charity given for pride or to avoid mockery will not be rewarded by Allah.
