📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Chapter – Surah At-Tawbah Verse 64

"The hypocrites fear that a Surah (chapter) may be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts [178]. Say, 'Mock on [179]; indeed, Allah will bring forth that which you fear [180].'"

✅ 178. Revelation Exposes the Hypocrites

It is important to note the pronouns in this verse: "to them" and "informing them" refer to the Muslims, while "what is in their hearts" refers to the hypocrites. From this, we learn three key points:

  1. The revelation of the Qur'an to the Holy Prophet ﷺ serves the purpose of guiding his followers—therefore, its message is also a message directly to the believers.

  2. The Prophet ﷺ already knew the inner reality of the hypocrites. The purpose of these verses was to inform the believers and make them aware of who the hypocrites were—this is why the plural form "informing them" is used.

  3. The Prophet ﷺ, in his mercy, would refrain from publicly humiliating the hypocrites. However, it was the Qur’an that exposed their secrets and made their reality known. This shows the Qur’an’s role in clarifying hidden truths.

✅ 179. The Command to "Mock On"

Here, the hypocrites are sarcastically told to continue mocking, but it is not permission—it is a form of divine rebuke. When it comes to religious laws or matters related to Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ, mocking is a serious offense. This statement is meant to scold and warn the hypocrites, not to excuse their behavior.

✅ 180. Fulfillment of the Warning

Allah Almighty indeed fulfilled this warning. The very thing the hypocrites feared—that their inner secrets would be revealed—was brought to light. They were exposed and disgraced through the Qur’anic verses, confirming Allah’s promise to reveal the truth and uncover their falsehood.

Ibn-Kathir

64. The hypocrites fear lest a Surah should be revealed about them, showing them what is in their hearts. Say: “(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly Allah will bring to light all that you fear.”

The Hypocrites fear Public Exposure of Their Secrets

Mujahid said, “The hypocrites would say something to each other then declare, `We wish that Allah does not expose this secret of ours,” There is a similar Ayah to this one, that is, Allah’s statement,

(And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting wherewith Allah greets you not, and say within themselves: “Why should Allah punish us not for what we say” Hell will be sufficient for them; they will burn therein. And worst indeed is that destination!) ﴿58:8﴾. Allah said in this Ayah,

﴿قُلِ اسْتَهْزِءُواْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ﴾

(Say: “(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly Allah will bring to light all that you fear.”), He will expose and explain your reality to His Messenger through revelation. Allah said in other Ayat,

﴿أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن يُخْرِجَ اللَّهُ أَضْغَـنَهُمْ ﴾

(Or do those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy), think that Allah will not bring to light all their hidden ill-wills) ﴿47:29﴾, until,

﴿وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْ فِى لَحْنِ الْقَوْلِ﴾

(but surely, you will know them by the tone of their speech!)﴿47:30﴾. This is why, according to Qatadah, this Surah is called `Al-Fadihah’ (the Exposing), because it exposed the hypocrites.

(9:64) The hypocrites are afraid lest a surah should be revealed concerning them intimating to the believers what lay hidden in their hearts.[72] Tell them (O Prophet): “Continue your mockery if you will. Allah will surely bring to light all that whose disclosure you dread.”

Ala-Maududi

(9:64) The hypocrites are afraid lest a surah should be revealed concerning them intimating to the believers what lay hidden in their hearts.[72] Tell them (O Prophet): “Continue your mockery if you will. Allah will surely bring to light all that whose disclosure you dread.”

72. The hypocrites were afraid that their secret plans would be disclosed in the Quran to their great discomfort. Though they did not believe that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was a Messenger of Allah, they were convinced from their experience of the last nine years or so that he possessed some supernatural powers by which he learned their hidden secrets, and revealed these through the Quran (which according to them was written by him).

(64) The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a sūrah be revealed about them, informing them of[490] what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allāh will expose that which you fear."

[490]- i.e., exposing the truth about.
