Transliteration:( Ya'taziroona ilaikum izaa raja'tum ilaihim; qul laa ta'taziroo lan nu'mina lakum qad nabba annal laahu min akhbaarikum; wa sa yaral laahu 'amalakum wa Rasooluhoo thumma turaddoona ilaa 'Aalimil Ghaibi washshahaadati fa yunabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon )
“They will make excuses [254] to you when you return to them [255]. Say: 'Do not make excuses; we will never believe [256] you. Allah has already informed us of your state [257].' And Allah and His Messenger will observe your actions, then you will be returned [258] to the Knower of the unseen and seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do [259].”
This verse addresses the hypocrites who stayed behind during the Battle of Tabuk. Upon the Muslims’ return to Madina Munawwarah, these hypocrites would try to make false excuses in an attempt to convince and please the believers. This prophecy proved true, as over eighty hypocrites made excuses for not participating in the battle.
The verse does not specify "after you have returned" because some hypocrites had already come with their excuses before the Muslims had returned to Madina Munawwarah. This reflects the urgency with which the hypocrites sought to justify their absence.
From this, we learn that it is not necessary to express falsehood or excuses in the presence of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Pride and deceit will not benefit anyone. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is fully aware of the true nature of each individual. When in his presence, one should not boast but rather seek forgiveness and repentance. It is also important to note that true repentance is about correcting one's actions, not merely offering verbal excuses. May Allah Almighty grant guidance.
This verse reveals several important points regarding repentance:
Repentance for a practical sin should involve performing a good deed. Verbal repentance alone is insufficient. Here, “will see your work” refers to the future participation in battles as a form of repentance for not engaging in the previous battle.
Good deeds done for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ should never be regarded as riya (showing off). These actions should be driven by the genuine desire to please Allah and follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ observes both our outward and inward deeds, as there is no restriction on the Prophet ﷺ regarding our actions, whether open or concealed.
Mentioning the Holy Prophet ﷺ with Allah Almighty is permissible, and one can say, “If Allah Almighty and His Beloved Rasool ﷺ so please, it will be done.” This emphasizes the bond between the Prophet ﷺ and Allah.
On the Day of Qiyamah, Allah will judge all deeds, both open and concealed. Allah Almighty is fully aware of everything—both what is apparent and what is hidden. Thus, one must do good deeds with good intentions and be sincere in their actions.
After the warning and admonition, Allah will reveal the evil deeds of the infidels and the good deeds of the believers. Allah will expose the actions of everyone, ensuring that the true nature of each individual is revealed, as mentioned in other verses. Punishment for the infidels and reward for the believers will follow.
94. They (the hypocrites) will present their excuses to you (Muslims), when you return to them. Say “Present no excuses, we shall not believe you. Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you. Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds. In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do.” 95. They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims) when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, they are Rijs (impure), and Hell is their dwelling place — a recompense for that which they used to earn. 96. They (the hypocrites) swear to you (Muslims) that you may be pleased with them, but if you are pleased with them, certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Fasiqin (rebellious).
Allah said that when the believers go back to Al-Madinah, the hypocrites will begin apologizing to them.
(Say “Present no excuses, we shall not believe you.”), we shall not believe what you say,
(Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you.) Allah has exposed your news to us,
(Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds.) your actions will be made public to people in this life,
(In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do.) Allah will inform you of your deeds, whether they were good or evil, and will recompense you for them. Allah said that the hypocrites will swear to the believers in apology, so that the believers turn away from them without admonishing them. Therefore, Allah ordered disgracing them by turning away from them, for they are,
(Rijs) meaning, impure inwardly and in their creed. Their destination in the end will be Jahannam,
(a recompense for that which they used to earn.) of sins and evil deeds. Allah said that if the believers forgive the hypocrites when they swear to them,
(certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Fasiqin.) who rebel against the obedience of Allah and His Messenger . `Fisq’, means, `deviation’.
(9:94) They will put up excuses before you when you return to them. Tell them: “Make no excuses. We will not believe you. Allah has already informed us of the truth about you. Allah will observe your conduct, and so will His Messenger; then you will be brought back to Him Who knows alike what lies beyond perception and what lies in the range of perception and will let you know what you have done.”
