Surah At-Tawbah Ayat 94 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

254. This means Oh Muslims! by the time you reach Madina Munawwara from the Battle of Tabuk, the hypocrites who had remained behind will be making false excuses for not going in an effort to convince and please you. In this there is a prophesy which proved true to the letter. Those hypocrites who had remained behind were more than eighty in number.

255. Here it is not said after you have returned, because some hypocrites had come with their excuses to the Muslim before they had returned to Madina Munawwarah. (Roohul Bayaan).

256. From this we learn it is absolutely not necessary to express anything about oneself in the presence of the Holy Prophet Here pride will not avail  you.

The Messenger of Allah is fully aware about the true nature of every one. When in his blessed presence do not boast but seek forgiveness. Do not be stubborn but offer repentance. May Allah Almighty give guidance! We further learn that it is a good act to offer repentence at the hands of the pious servants of Allah Almighty. Here these hypocrites were not censured for offering repentance but their false excuses.

257. From this emerges four issues:

1. The repentance of a practical sin should be obtained through doing a good act - mere verbal repentance would not be sufficient. Thus "will see your work" is used here 1.e. whether you will be participating in future battle or not. The repentance for refraining holy war is the participation in future wars.

2 To do good deeds for Allah Almighty and see will His Beloved Prophet not be regarded as RIYA or showing off Every is desire of the Holy Prophet the desire of Allah Almighty.

3.  The holy prophet is looking at our outer and inner deeds, because no restriction is effected here in respect of deeds, what is said here is all your outer and concealed deeds are seen by the Holy Prophet SAW.

4 Remembrance of the Holy Prophet with Allah Almighty is You can say If Allah Almighty and His Beloved Rasool so please it will be done. Allah Almighty and Rasool have blessed us with faith, bestowed wealth upon us, etc.

258. During Qiyamah, Thus do good deeds and have good intentions because Allah Almighty is fully aware of everything open and concealed.

259. After warning and admonishing He will punish you. He will reveal in the open the evil deeds of the infidels and good deeds of the believers as is mentioned in other verses.

Ibn-Kathir

94. They (the hypocrites) will present their excuses to you (Muslims), when you return to them. Say “Present no excuses, we shall not believe you. Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you. Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds. In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do.” 95. They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims) when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, they are Rijs (impure), and Hell is their dwelling place — a recompense for that which they used to earn. 96. They (the hypocrites) swear to you (Muslims) that you may be pleased with them, but if you are pleased with them, certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Fasiqin (rebellious).

Exposing the Deceitful Ways of Hypocrites

Allah said that when the believers go back to Al-Madinah, the hypocrites will begin apologizing to them.

(Say “Present no excuses, we shall not believe you.”), we shall not believe what you say,

(Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you.) Allah has exposed your news to us,

(Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds.) your actions will be made public to people in this life,

(In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do.) Allah will inform you of your deeds, whether they were good or evil, and will recompense you for them. Allah said that the hypocrites will swear to the believers in apology, so that the believers turn away from them without admonishing them. Therefore, Allah ordered disgracing them by turning away from them, for they are,

(Rijs) meaning, impure inwardly and in their creed. Their destination in the end will be Jahannam,

(a recompense for that which they used to earn.) of sins and evil deeds. Allah said that if the believers forgive the hypocrites when they swear to them,

(certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Fasiqin.) who rebel against the obedience of Allah and His Messenger . `Fisq’, means, `deviation’.

(9:94) They will put up excuses before you when you return to them. Tell them: “Make no excuses. We will not believe you. Allah has already informed us of the truth about you. Allah will observe your conduct, and so will His Messenger; then you will be brought back to Him Who knows alike what lies beyond perception and what lies in the range of perception and will let you know what you have done.”
