📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 24 – Surah At-Tawbah

Please declare: "If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your wives [50], and your clan [51], and the wealth of your earnings [52], and the trade of which you fear loss, and the houses of your choice, are things [53] dearer [54] to you than Allah and His Messenger, and the striving in His Path, then wait till Allah sends His Command. And Allah guides not the disobedient."

✅ 50 Prioritizing Love for Allah and the Prophet ﷺ over Family

You are allowed to fulfill family rights prescribed by Shariah, even if they are non-Muslims. However, wholehearted love and attachment for them that surpasses the love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ is unlawful.

The heart’s deepest inclination must never turn toward the enemies of Allah and His beloved Prophet ﷺ.

Moreover, loving an infidel wholeheartedly is considered a form of infidelity itself.

When the rights of the Creator and the creation come into conflict, the priority must always be given to the rights of the Creator.

✅ 51 Inclusive Scope of “Your Clan”

The word “your clan” comprehensively includes all in-laws, blood relatives, and extended family ties.

✅ 52 Emphasis on Earned Wealth

Mentioning “wealth of your earnings” alongside inherited wealth highlights that wealth earned through personal effort holds greater value and responsibility than inherited wealth, reflecting sincere sacrifice.

✅ 53 Love for Material Things: Allowed but Regulated

Love for worldly possessions and material things is not prohibited, provided it does not take precedence over love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

Unlawful love, such as illicit relationships, is strictly forbidden.

✅ 54 Supreme Love for the Prophet ﷺ as a Mark of Faith

This verse’s commentary connects to the Hadith which states that none is a true believer unless the Prophet ﷺ is more beloved to him than his parents, children, and all others.

This love is not merely rational or common affection but a deep, natural, obedient love rooted in reverence and obedience, similar to one’s love for Allah Almighty.

Loving the Prophet ﷺ sincerely is an essential part of faith, and lacking this love is tantamount to disbelief and deserving of severe consequences.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Taubah verse 24 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taubah ayat 23 which provides the complete commentary from verse 23 through 24.

(9:24) Tell them, (O Prophet): “If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your wives and your tribe and the riches you have acquired and the commerce of which you fear a slackening, and the dwellings that you love, if they are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His decree.[22] Allah does not guide the evil-doing folk.”

Ala-Maududi

(9:24) Tell them, (O Prophet): “If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your wives and your tribe and the riches you have acquired and the commerce of which you fear a slackening, and the dwellings that you love, if they are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His decree.[22] Allah does not guide the evil-doing folk.”

22. That is: “The judgment will deprive them of the blessings of the true faith, and of the honor of bearing its standard and leading the world towards its guidance and bestow these on others”.

(24) Say, [O Muḥammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and jihād [i.e., striving] in His cause, then wait until Allāh executes His command. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."
