Transliteration:( Wa law annahum radoo maaa aataahumul laahu wa Rasooluhoo wa qaaloo hasbunal laahu sayu'teenallaahu min fadlihee wa Rasooluhooo innaaa ilallaahi raaghiboon )
What good would it have been if they had been pleased [159] with what Allah and His Messenger had given them and would have said: "Sufficient [160] for us is Allah. Allah gives us of His Bounty [161] and so the Messenger of Allah. To Allah, only, we turn in submission."
From this, we learn that it is absolutely correct to be content with the faith and blessings given by Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet. Allah has saved believers from Hellfire and bestows continuous bounties upon them, often through the medium of the Holy Prophet.
Whether or not material wealth is gained, the bounty and blessings of Allah alone are sufficient. This conviction marks the true believer’s heart.
Every blessing and bounty mentioned here is distributed by the Holy Prophet, highlighting the intertwined roles of Allah Almighty and His Messenger in bestowing favors without any limitation.
The tafsir of Surah Taubah verse 59 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taubah ayat 58 which provides the complete commentary from verse 58 through 59.
(9:59) Would that they were content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them,[58] and were to say: “Allah suffices for us, and Allah will give us out of His bounty and so will His Messenger.[59] It is to Allah alone that we turn with hope.”[60]
58. That is, it would have been much better for them if they had been content with their share of the spoils which the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave them and what they earned by the grace of Allah and with the prosperity Allah had bestowed on them.
59. It would have been good for them to adopt this attitude: “Sufficient is Allah for us,” for they ought to have known that they would receive their due shares besides the Zakat collections out of the wealth that would come to the state treasury, just as they were receiving their shares previously.
60. “Indeed to Allah we are suppliants” means we give our attention to Allah and His grace and not to the world and its worthless riches and we desire to obey His will: we direct our expectations and hopes to Him and we are content with what He bestows on us.
[486]- Meaning "We desire Allāh and His grace and acceptance," or "We desire whatever Allāh wills to give us of His bounty."
