📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Chapter – Surah At-Tawbah Verse 67

"The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are all alike [184]. They enjoin evil and forbid good [185] and withhold their hands [186]. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Indeed, the hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient [187]."

✅ 184. Equality in Hypocrisy

This verse emphasizes that both hypocrite men and women share the same characteristics and consequences—there is no distinction in their hypocrisy. Whether leaders or followers, all are equally devoid of true faith and are categorized as hypocrites. None among them are true believers despite any external claims or status.

✅ 185. Enjoining Evil and Forbidding Good

Hypocrites actively promote evil and discourage righteous behavior. Preventing others from engaging in good deeds and pious acts is a hallmark of their behavior. This serves as a reminder to those who obstruct beneficial spiritual activities—like remembering Allah, attending gatherings about the Saints, or other acts of faith—that such obstruction is contrary to the path of righteousness. The verse indirectly warns groups who inhibit communal worship or good deeds, highlighting their harmful interference.

✅ 186. Withholding Wealth and Preventing Charity

Hypocrites neither spend their wealth in the cause of Allah nor allow others to do so freely. Their stinginess extends beyond personal withholding to obstructing charitable acts by others. This includes preventing others from charitable gatherings or religious commemorations, such as Fatihas for pious servants of Allah. Such behavior reflects a denial of true generosity and devotion.

✅ 187. Defiantly Disobedient

Though hypocrites outwardly claim Islam, they are inwardly sinful and rebellious. The verse calls them “defiantly disobedient” due to their persistent evil deeds and rejection of true faith. Among the various categories of sinfulness, disbelief and hypocrisy represent the gravest forms, standing in direct opposition to sincere belief and obedience.

Ibn-Kathir

67. The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin evil, and forbid the good, and they close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the rebellious. 68. Allah has promised the hypocrites — men and women — and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell; therein shall they abide. It will suffice them. Allah has cursed them and for them is the lasting torment.

Other Characteristics of Hypocrites

Allah admonishes the hypocrites who, unlike the believers, who enjoin righteousness and forbid evil,

(they enjoin evil, and forbid the good, and they close their hands), from spending in Allah’s cause,

(They have forgotten Allah), they have forgotten the remembrance of Allah,

(so He has forgotten them.), by treating them as if He has forgotten them. Allah also,

(And it will be said: “This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours) ﴿45:34﴾. Allah said,

(Verily, the hypocrites are the rebellious) the rebellious from the way of truth who embrace the wicked way,

(Allah has promised the hypocrites — men and women — and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell), on account of their evildoing mentioned here,

(therein shall they abide.), for eternity, they and the disbelievers,

(It will suffice them.), as a torment,

(Allah has cursed them), He expelled and banished them ﴿from His mercy﴾,

(and for them is the lasting torment.)

(9:67) The hypocrites, be they men or women, are all alike. They enjoin what is evil, and forbid what is good, and withhold their hands from doing good.[75] They forgot Allah, so Allah also forgot them. Surely the hypocrites are wicked.

Ala-Maududi

(9:67) The hypocrites, be they men or women, are all alike. They enjoin what is evil, and forbid what is good, and withhold their hands from doing good.[75] They forgot Allah, so Allah also forgot them. Surely the hypocrites are wicked.

75. These are the common characteristics of all hypocrites. All of them are interested in evil and inimical to good. If someone undertakes to do an evil thing, they would dedicate all their sympathies, counsels, encouragements, contributions, good wishes, praises, and their approvals to such a one. They would join hands to accomplish that evil thing and persuade others to take part in it and encourage others in every way. Moreover, they would show in every way their hearty pleasure if they perceived that the evil thing was progressing satisfactorily. On the other hand, if someone undertakes to do a good thing, they are shocked to bear the very news of it for it pains their hearts; nay, they do not even like that such a thing should be undertaken at all. Then, if they see someone coming forward to help it, they feel very uncomfortable and try their best to hinder him from it, and if he does not give it up, they would wish that he should fail in it. Then all of them have this common characteristic that they do not spend anything at all for good ends irrespective of the fact whether they be otherwise parsimonious or generous. At any rate, their wealth is either for hoarding or for evil deeds. As a matter of fact, they would spend large sums on evil works generously but would not be willing to spend a farthing for good things.

(67) The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands.[491] They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

[491]- i.e., refuse to spend in the way of Allāh.
