📖 Commentary of Surah At-Tawbah – Verse 15

"And He will remove the anger of their hearts. And Allah accepts the repentance of whomsoever He pleases. And Allah is All-Knowing, Wise [33]."

✅ 33 Fulfillment of Prophecy Through Repentance of Former Enemies

This verse continues from the previous one, highlighting that through victory and Divine justice, not only would the external harm caused by the disbelievers be addressed, but also the internal pain and anger felt by the believers would be soothed and removed.

The verse also foretells that some of the very enemies of Islam would eventually repent and accept faith. This was miraculously fulfilled, as prominent figures such as:

  • Abu Sufyan,

  • ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, and

  • Hazrat Abbas (RA)
all embraced Islam later, becoming devoted Muslims and supporters of the Prophet ﷺ.

This serves as a reminder of Allah’s attribute of accepting repentance from whomever He wills, and His ability to turn the hearts of even the most hardened enemies. He is All-Knowing of people's true intentions and All-Wise in granting guidance and forgiveness.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Taubah verse 15 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taubah ayat 13 which provides the complete commentary from verse 13 through 15.

(9:15) and will remove rage from their hearts, and will enable whomsoever He wills to repent.[17] Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Ala-Maududi

(9:15) and will remove rage from their hearts, and will enable whomsoever He wills to repent.[17] Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

17. This was a subtle reference to the possibility of what actually was going to happen afterwards. “And He will remove”: this was to remove the misunderstandings of the Muslims who apprehended a bloody war as a result of the declaration. They were told that it was also possible that some of the enemies might repent and embrace Islam. This was not made quite plain lest it should slacken the war preparations of the Muslims on one side and weaken the force of the warning to the mushriks on the other. The latter thing might have hindered the mushriks from giving a serious thought to the critical position they were in that finally led them to embrace Islam.

(15) And remove the fury in their [i.e., the believers'] hearts. And Allāh turns in forgiveness to whom He wills; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
