Commentary (Tafsir) of Chapter – Surah At-Tawbah Verse 76

"Then, when Allah gave them out of His Bounty, they became misers and turned away, turning their faces [212]."

212. Reason for Revelation
This verse was revealed regarding Tha'labah ibn Hatib who was initially poor. He requested the Holy Prophet ﷺ to pray that he becomes wealthy. The Prophet ﷺ advised that poverty was better for him. Tha'labah swore that if he became wealthy, he would express abundant gratitude to Allah Almighty.

In response, the Prophet ﷺ prayed for him, and Allah Almighty blessed him with such abundance in sheep that they could not all be kept in Madina.

However, Tha'labah then took his sheep to the jungle, which deprived him of congregational Salaah. He began to reject the institution of Zakaat. When the Zakaat collector was sent to him by the Holy Prophet ﷺ, he complained that Zakaat was a severe tax and delayed payment. This was reported to the Prophet ﷺ, who refused to accept his Zakaat.

His Zakaat was also rejected later during the Caliphates of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique and Hazrat Umar Farooq (May Allah be pleased with them). Ultimately, Tha'labah died an apostate during the Caliphate of Hazrat Uthman (May Allah be pleased with him).

Please refer to Surah Taubah ayat 75 which provides the complete commentary from verse 75 through 78.

(9:76) Then, when He gave them out of His bounty, they grew niggardly and turned their backs (upon their covenant).[86]

Ala-Maududi

(9:76) Then, when He gave them out of His bounty, they grew niggardly and turned their backs (upon their covenant).[86]

86. This is an instance of their ingratitude for which the hypocrites were rebuked in Ayat 74.

They broke their covenant with Allah which enjoined them to spend money in charity, if Allah enriched them by His bounty. This shows that they were confirmed criminals and they did not care in the least for the agreements they made, and were niggardly and had no moral code to observe.

(76) But when He gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused.
