    Transliteration:( Qaala innee la yahzununeee an tazhaboo bihee wa akhaafu any ya'kulahuz zi'bu wa antum 'anhu ghaafiloon )

    13. He said, "It will grieve me that you take him away, and I fear that a wolf [23] may devour him while you are unaware of him." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

    📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 13

    "He said, 'It will grieve me that you take him away, and I fear that a wolf [23] may devour him while you are unaware of him.'"

    ✅ 23. The Symbolism of the Wolf

    The verse refers to Hazrat Yaqoob (on whom be peace) expressing his fear that a wolf might devour his son Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace). However, this fear isn't based on the literal interpretation of a wolf attacking him, but rather as a symbolic reference.

    According to the commentary, the word "wolf" might be metaphorical, referring to the brothers of Hazrat Yusuf themselves. Hazrat Yaqoob, being aware of his son's noble status, knew that no wolf could harm a Prophet's body because Prophets are divinely protected.

    Thus, the wolf symbolically represents the harm that Hazrat Yusuf's brothers might bring upon him, particularly their plan to destroy him due to their jealousy and ill intentions.

    The phrase "while you are unaware of him" suggests that Hazrat Yaqoob's sons were unaware of the noble status of Hazrat Yusuf. This lack of awareness reflects their misunderstanding and misjudgment regarding his special position in the eyes of Allah.

    In essence, Hazrat Yaqoob's concern was not just for Yusuf’s physical safety but also for the unwitting harm caused by his sons due to their lack of understanding of Yusuf’s true significance.

    13. He (Ya`qub) said: “Truly, it saddens me that you should take him away. I fear lest a wolf should devour him, while you are careless of him.” 14. They said: “If a wolf devours him, while we are `Usbah (a group), then surely, we are the losers.”

    Ya`qub’s Answer to Their Request

    Allah narrates to us that His Prophet Ya`qub said to his children, in response to their request that he send Yusuf with them to the desert to tend their cattle,

    ﴿إِنِّى لَيَحْزُنُنِى أَن تَذْهَبُواْ بِهِ﴾

    (Truly, it saddens me that you should take him away.) He said that it was hard on him that he be separated from Yusuf for the duration of their trip, until they came back. This demonstrates the deep love that Ya`qub had for his son, because he saw in Yusuf great goodness and exalted qualities with regards to conduct and physical attractiveness associated with the rank of prophethood. May Allah’s peace and blessings be on him. Prophet Ya`qub’s statement next,

    ﴿وَأَخَافُ أَن يَأْكُلَهُ الذِّئْبُ وَأَنْتُمْ عَنْهُ غَـفِلُونَ﴾

    (I fear lest a wolf should devour him, while you are careless of him.) He said to them, `I fear that you might be careless with him while you are tending the cattle and shooting, then a wolf might come and eat him while you are unaware.’ They heard these words from his mouth and used them in their response for what they did afterwards. They also gave a spontaneous reply for their father’s statement, saying,

    ﴿لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ الذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّآ إِذَا لَّخَـسِرُونَ﴾

    (If a wolf devours him, while we are an `Usbah, then surely, we are the losers.) They said, `If a wolf should attack and devour him while we are all around him in a strong group, then indeed we are the losers and weak.’

    (12:13) Their father answered: “It grieves me indeed that you should take him with you for I fear that some wolf might eat him up while you are negligent of him.”

    Ala-Maududi

    (12:13) Their father answered: “It grieves me indeed that you should take him with you for I fear that some wolf might eat him up while you are negligent of him.”

    There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.

    (13) [Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."
