    قَالُواْ نَفۡقِدُ صُوَاعَ ٱلۡمَلِكِ وَلِمَن جَآءَ بِهِۦ حِمۡلُ بَعِيرٖ وَأَنَا۠ بِهِۦ زَعِيمٞ

    Transliteration:( Qaaloo nafqidu suwaa'al maliki wa liman jaaa'a bihee himlu ba'eerinw wa ana bihee za'eem )

    72. They said, “We are missing the king’s measuring cup [154], and whoever brings it will receive a camel’s load [155]. I am responsible for it [156].” (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

    (72) They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it." (Saheen International Translation)

    📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 72

    "They said, 'We are missing the king’s measuring cup [154], and whoever brings it will receive a camel’s load [155]. I am responsible for it [156].'"

    ✅ The King’s Measuring Cup [154]

    The king would drink water from this cup, and it was decked with jewels. At that point in time, the grain was measured with it. This cup was placed in Benyamin's goods after which the caravan left for Kanaan.

    ✅ The Reward for Returning the Cup [155]

    This means whoever brought back the cup would be given a reward of one camel and grain. Nowadays too, a reward is announced to recover lost things. This verse serves as a source for it.

    ✅ The Practice of Standing as a Guarantor [156]

    This tells that it is permissible to stand as security and guarantee for goods. The word ZAEEM stands for guarantee. Today too, there is the practice of standing as a guarantor. The source of this practice is the verse under discussion.

    (12:72) The officials said: “We have lost the king’s cup.” (And their chief added): “He who brings it shall have a camel-load of provisions, I guarantee that.”

    Ala-Maududi

    (12:72) The officials said: “We have lost the king’s cup.” (And their chief added): “He who brings it shall have a camel-load of provisions, I guarantee that.”

    There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.
