📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 48

"Then after that, there will come seven hard years [107], which will consume all that you have stored up for them, except for a little that you may save."

✅ 107. The Seven Years of Hardship

After the seven years of prosperity, Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) foretells that there will be seven years of hardship, during which all the stored grain will be consumed. The amount of grain that can be saved depends on how much has been harvested and stored during the prosperous years.

✅ Lessons on Saving and Tawakkul

This teaches us that saving for hard times is not against Tawakkul (reliance on Allah Almighty), but rather, it is Allah's command. In S17:V29, Allah says, "Nor open it completely lest you sit down, blamed tired", advising moderation in spending and saving. People should save a portion of their income for future difficulties, as we never know what hardships might come.

Moreover, hoarding or accumulating goods in a way that harms others, such as holding grain when others are in dire need, is forbidden. This is known as Ihrikaar in Arabic, which refers to hoarding goods in anticipation of scarcity or price hikes, at the expense of others' well-being.
